Expansion: How to Grow When You See Impossibility

“Expansion” is a word that’s been stirring in my spirit lately.
And I believe it’s an invitation from God to each one of us.

Not as a pressure to advance, but a call to participate in our inheritance.
To say yes to Him, and step into increase.

Expansion and the Atmosphere of God’s Kingdom

Expansion: How to Grow When You See Impossibility, text on background of a fruit tree above a grey brick wallIt’s a word that came up during our recent Planetshakers conference.
Expansion.

It carried breath, life, and the atmosphere of God’s Kingdom.

Yet when I looked back on my notes, I hadn’t recorded it and couldn’t remember who had mentioned it!
So, I began studying and writing, and created a first draft of this post.
Then last Sunday, one of our conference speakers preached at our church on “Divine authority for expansion.”

My first thought was, “Aha! That’s who mentioned it at the conference!
Jason Lozano” [1]

I was encouraged as I returned to the study.

But it seems the Holy Spirit wasn’t finished yet.
Two days later, I spoke to a prophetic leader outside of Australia, who said, “God gave me the word expansion for this year!”
We were both astounded.

When Jabez Prayed

One of the reasons I was amazed is this:
“Expansion” is not a descriptor many of us would use for ourselves! [2]

Although…
Many of us can identify with a man called Jabez, who prayed for expansion:

“Oh, that you would bless me and expand my territory!
Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!”
(1 Chronicles 4:10, NLT)

Jabez’ name meant “pain”.
He’d been called that his whole life!
But he looked beyond his earthly identity to God and His very nature.

And “God granted him his request.”
(1 Chronicles 4:10b)

7 Prophetic Insights for Expansion When You See Impossibility

1. Expansion Is God’s Nature

In the beginning, God blessed Adam and Eve to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth. (Genesis 1:28)
He blessed them for expansion.

So Jabez’s prayer, “bless me and expand my territory”, reflected the first blessing of the Father.
And God honored Jabez’ faith.

Now, his humble prayer reaches us today.
The Kingdom of God is continually expanding!

As Isaiah prophesied about Jesus:

“Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end…”
(Isaiah 9:7a, NKJV)

So expansion is the nature of God’s Kingdom.

2. Expansion Begins With Asking

Why did God interrupt the genealogy narrative of Chronicles to tell Jabez’s story?

Because he wants us to know:
This is a prayer he loves to answer.

And he’s saying, “My son, my daughter, will you ask?”
For blessing.
For expansion.

Knowing that it is already yours for the asking.

The psalmist writes of the Father’s declaration over King Jesus:

“Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth for Your possession.”
(Psalm 2:8, NKJV)

And in Jesus’ final words,
He invites us to share in this mission with Him (Matthew 28:18-20).

3. Expansion Emerges Through Redemption

Jabez’s mother named him after a painful childbirth.
Implicit in his name was the message, “You caused pain. You are a pain.”

But Jabez called on God,  believing He was a Redeemer.
His family cursed him, yet Jabez dared to ask for a blessing!

There’s always going to be resistance against expansion.

When the world denies the possibility.
Saying, “You’re not enough.”
Or “You’re not old enough, young enough, or have enough!”

When the enemy is occupying the space in front of you.
And filling the air with threats, like Goliath with David.

Opposition is often the very sign of where God is moving.
And it cannot delay expansion.

Instead, God uses it to strengthen and prepare us for increase.

4. Expansion Requires Leaving Familiar Ground

Lately, my eyes have been drawn back to the word “pioneer.”

Like Abraham in Genesis, expansion causes us to move beyond our boundary lines.
To uproot tent pegs.
And to leave our comfort zones.

Expansion means we’re marching off the map.
God told Abraham to “look at the stars”.

So, God gave Abraham a vision:
Of stars, abundance, and expansion.

The Holy Spirit pulls us onwards, saying, “There is more!”

5. Expansion Comes Through Abiding, Obedience, and Faith

God calls us to a face-to-face relationship with Him, and “ever increasing glory” (2 Cor 3:18)

Throughout his life, Jabez had been shamed in front of his family.
Yet the Bible declares,

“Jabez was more honorable than his brothers.”
(1 Chron 4:9a)

It’s a divine principle.
Today, receive this word:

“Instead of shame and dishonor,
you will enjoy a double share of honor.
You will possess a double portion of prosperity in your land,
and everlasting joy will be yours.”
(Isaiah 61:7, NLT)

Divine expansion and transformation go together.
Expansion comes through abiding in Him.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”
(John 15:5, NKJV)

This growth flows from alignment, not effort.

From this place, we:

  • Receive God’s Word with open, responsive hearts (Mark 4:8), and
  • Obey in faith, and boldly declare what God has spoken (Hebrews 11)

6. Expansion Often Arrives Through Pruning and Loss

34 years ago, God gave Malcolm and me this promise:

“Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations…” (Psalm 2:8)

Many times, since we received that word, the opposite has happened.
And the very way we expected God to fulfill the promise was taken from us.

You may know what this feels like.
But these setbacks are just a reminder:
The story isn’t over!

“Every branch that bears fruit He prunes,
that it may bear more fruit
” (John 15:2)

Even in loss, God is preparing us for an increase.
And here we are.
As I write, my husband Malcolm is in Southeast Asia.
We’re experiencing the fulfillment of that very promise.

7. God Releases Expansion by Grace, Not Strength

The story of Jabez reminds us that expansion is through grace, not by our own strength.

A few years ago, I shared a prophetic insight using the phrase “expansion pack” for a business.

I recalled that when our children lived at home, they enjoyed computer games.

An expansion pack added new features: new places, characters, and tools that weren’t in the original game.

  • In the same way, God brings the right people, provision, and opportunities at just the right time.

It’s His grace at work.
He adds what we could never make happen on our own.
And when He does this, He gets the glory.

“May the Lord give you increase more and more, you and your children.” (Psalm 115:14, NKJV)

“Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory…” (Psalm 115:1, AMP)

As Paul wrote:

“God gives the increase.”
(see 1 Corinthians 3:6–7)

The Miracle is in the Stretch

If you can relate to Jabez and his prayer,
Be encouraged by this reminder:

  • God is anointing the unlikely to become history-makers.

As the Lord spoke through Isaiah, He calls to us:

“Enlarge the place of your tent,
And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; Do not spare; Lengthen your cords,
And strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, And your descendants will inherit the nations, And make the desolate cities inhabited.”
Isaiah 54:2-3 NKJV

“Don’t settle for less than I have for you.”

To expand, we must uproot the tent pegs from past ground.
We make room for those God loves:
Even those we haven’t met yet.

We stretch, and the miracle is in the stretch.

Notes:

[1] We attended the Planetshakers Conference here in Melbourne, Australia (Planetshakers Church is our home church). Jason Lozano from Freedom City Church, CA, was one of the speakers.

[2] “Expansion” is often used as a geopolitical term in the news. But I love this reminder from the Holy Spirit, that it’s a Kingdom truth, with a powerful foundation in Scripture. And I’m grateful for His kindness and the confirmations that this is a prophetic insight. I considered other synonyms, but “expansion” was the one in which I felt His presence!

  1. Thanks Helen, for the great words. As James and I ponder on what to do as Connecting Japan turns 7, we pray even though it does seem impossible for us to go to Japan, God will open a way forward.

    1. Hi Julie and James, congratulations on the seventh anniversary! That’s very significant. I pray you will find the space God has for you to minister to Japan and the much-loved Japanese people he’s called you to.

  2. I’m currently going through this. God has promised many things and has directed me down an unknown path where my faith and finances and have been going through much stretching. In this transition in my job, I’m currently not earning, my finances have been severely depleted and I have so much expenses still ahead that I’m trusting God to provide in abundance for, in order to be at the place he has called me to be which links my work with ministry.

Point 6 speaks to me most – there has been so much pruning and loss especially as it relates to faith and finances but God is faithful, my source, my provider and he will lift me out of this.

Please pray for God to give me clear guidance and a breakthrough so I step into the overflow.
    Thanks!

    1. Yes, amen David, praying that God will give you that clarity and wisdom you are seeking.
Psalm 37 comes to mind, such grace-filled promises,

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.”
      Psalm 37:4-5

  3. Number 6 resonate with me. Expansion arives through pruning and loss.
I started cretch or nursery school in 2023 with 13 kits. 2024 they increase to 21, 2025 decreased to 11 and this year someone came to start a school very close to mine.
Please for me. I want God to expand my territory

    1. That is so difficult Maboitumelo.
I pray for wisdom, and you will discover the unique favor and flavor that God has given to you.
May you be fruitful and flourish.

  4. Thank you for this wonderful message. It has helped me. I for one i am like what is No. 3. I have had opposition at my church through members who are attacking me for the course of not being committed. But i have stood my ground to let go whatever is happening and am focusing on my spiritual life for the will of God to do something in this place. After reading message I am really encouraged and i now have the strength a leader to continue serving.
Thank you very much. Your message is inspirational.

  5. Hi Helen, thank you for sharing this vision with us. As Jabez did not give up and accept his situation, so will I, I’ll keep on asking believing that my God who granted Jabez and all others who asked of their requests, will also grant me my request as well. Bless you prophetess
