“Expansion” is a word that’s been stirring in my spirit lately.
And I believe it’s an invitation from God to each one of us.
Not as a pressure to advance, but a call to participate in our inheritance.
To say yes to Him, and step into increase.
Expansion and the Atmosphere of God’s Kingdom
It’s a word that came up during our recent Planetshakers conference.
Expansion.
It carried breath, life, and the atmosphere of God’s Kingdom.
Yet when I looked back on my notes, I hadn’t recorded it and couldn’t remember who had mentioned it!
So, I began studying and writing, and created a first draft of this post.
Then last Sunday, one of our conference speakers preached at our church on “Divine authority for expansion.”
My first thought was, “Aha! That’s who mentioned it at the conference!
Jason Lozano” [1]
I was encouraged as I returned to the study.
But it seems the Holy Spirit wasn’t finished yet.
Two days later, I spoke to a prophetic leader outside of Australia, who said, “God gave me the word expansion for this year!”
We were both astounded.
When Jabez Prayed
One of the reasons I was amazed is this:
“Expansion” is not a descriptor many of us would use for ourselves! [2]
Although…
Many of us can identify with a man called Jabez, who prayed for expansion:
“Oh, that you would bless me and expand my territory!
Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!”
(1 Chronicles 4:10, NLT)
Jabez’ name meant “pain”.
He’d been called that his whole life!
But he looked beyond his earthly identity to God and His very nature.
And “God granted him his request.”
(1 Chronicles 4:10b)
7 Prophetic Insights for Expansion When You See Impossibility
1. Expansion Is God’s Nature
In the beginning, God blessed Adam and Eve to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth. (Genesis 1:28)
He blessed them for expansion.
So Jabez’s prayer, “bless me and expand my territory”, reflected the first blessing of the Father.
And God honored Jabez’ faith.
Now, his humble prayer reaches us today.
The Kingdom of God is continually expanding!
As Isaiah prophesied about Jesus:
“Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end…”
(Isaiah 9:7a, NKJV)
So expansion is the nature of God’s Kingdom.
2. Expansion Begins With Asking
Why did God interrupt the genealogy narrative of Chronicles to tell Jabez’s story?
Because he wants us to know:
This is a prayer he loves to answer.
And he’s saying, “My son, my daughter, will you ask?”
For blessing.
For expansion.
Knowing that it is already yours for the asking.
The psalmist writes of the Father’s declaration over King Jesus:
“Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth for Your possession.”
(Psalm 2:8, NKJV)
And in Jesus’ final words,
He invites us to share in this mission with Him (Matthew 28:18-20).
3. Expansion Emerges Through Redemption
Jabez’s mother named him after a painful childbirth.
Implicit in his name was the message, “You caused pain. You are a pain.”
But Jabez called on God, believing He was a Redeemer.
His family cursed him, yet Jabez dared to ask for a blessing!
There’s always going to be resistance against expansion.
When the world denies the possibility.
Saying, “You’re not enough.”
Or “You’re not old enough, young enough, or have enough!”
When the enemy is occupying the space in front of you.
And filling the air with threats, like Goliath with David.
Opposition is often the very sign of where God is moving.
And it cannot delay expansion.
Instead, God uses it to strengthen and prepare us for increase.
4. Expansion Requires Leaving Familiar Ground
Lately, my eyes have been drawn back to the word “pioneer.”
Like Abraham in Genesis, expansion causes us to move beyond our boundary lines.
To uproot tent pegs.
And to leave our comfort zones.
Expansion means we’re marching off the map.
God told Abraham to “look at the stars”.
So, God gave Abraham a vision:
Of stars, abundance, and expansion.
The Holy Spirit pulls us onwards, saying, “There is more!”
5. Expansion Comes Through Abiding, Obedience, and Faith
God calls us to a face-to-face relationship with Him, and “ever increasing glory” (2 Cor 3:18)
Throughout his life, Jabez had been shamed in front of his family.
Yet the Bible declares,
“Jabez was more honorable than his brothers.”
(1 Chron 4:9a)
It’s a divine principle.
Today, receive this word:
“Instead of shame and dishonor,
you will enjoy a double share of honor.
You will possess a double portion of prosperity in your land,
and everlasting joy will be yours.”
(Isaiah 61:7, NLT)
Divine expansion and transformation go together.
Expansion comes through abiding in Him.
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”
(John 15:5, NKJV)
This growth flows from alignment, not effort.
From this place, we:
- Receive God’s Word with open, responsive hearts (Mark 4:8), and
- Obey in faith, and boldly declare what God has spoken (Hebrews 11)
6. Expansion Often Arrives Through Pruning and Loss
34 years ago, God gave Malcolm and me this promise:
“Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations…” (Psalm 2:8)
Many times, since we received that word, the opposite has happened.
And the very way we expected God to fulfill the promise was taken from us.
You may know what this feels like.
But these setbacks are just a reminder:
The story isn’t over!
“Every branch that bears fruit He prunes,
that it may bear more fruit” (John 15:2)
Even in loss, God is preparing us for an increase.
And here we are.
As I write, my husband Malcolm is in Southeast Asia.
We’re experiencing the fulfillment of that very promise.
7. God Releases Expansion by Grace, Not Strength
The story of Jabez reminds us that expansion is through grace, not by our own strength.
A few years ago, I shared a prophetic insight using the phrase “expansion pack” for a business.
I recalled that when our children lived at home, they enjoyed computer games.
An expansion pack added new features: new places, characters, and tools that weren’t in the original game.
- In the same way, God brings the right people, provision, and opportunities at just the right time.
It’s His grace at work.
He adds what we could never make happen on our own.
And when He does this, He gets the glory.
“May the Lord give you increase more and more, you and your children.” (Psalm 115:14, NKJV)
“Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory…” (Psalm 115:1, AMP)
As Paul wrote:
“God gives the increase.”
(see 1 Corinthians 3:6–7)
The Miracle is in the Stretch
If you can relate to Jabez and his prayer,
Be encouraged by this reminder:
- God is anointing the unlikely to become history-makers.
As the Lord spoke through Isaiah, He calls to us:
“Enlarge the place of your tent,
And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; Do not spare; Lengthen your cords,
And strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, And your descendants will inherit the nations, And make the desolate cities inhabited.”
Isaiah 54:2-3 NKJV
“Don’t settle for less than I have for you.”
To expand, we must uproot the tent pegs from past ground.
We make room for those God loves:
Even those we haven’t met yet.
We stretch, and the miracle is in the stretch.

Notes:
[1] We attended the Planetshakers Conference here in Melbourne, Australia (Planetshakers Church is our home church). Jason Lozano from Freedom City Church, CA, was one of the speakers.
[2] “Expansion” is often used as a geopolitical term in the news. But I love this reminder from the Holy Spirit, that it’s a Kingdom truth, with a powerful foundation in Scripture. And I’m grateful for His kindness and the confirmations that this is a prophetic insight. I considered other synonyms, but “expansion” was the one in which I felt His presence!

Dear Sister Helen,
Thank you for the prophetic encouragement. When you write, “This growth flows from alignment, not effort” it speaks volumes in terms of my present scenario. Since for many years I have been feeling like I am in standstill mode with no movement in sight, I push hard mentally as if a person who struggles to swim forward against resisting waves, only to realize that no amount of self-effort would launch me into the orbit of progression but never-ceasing grace and mercy of our glorious LORD.
Hello Benny,
Yes the wonderful imagery of Jesus, abiding in the vine
In it the revelation of rest, of provision, and fruitfulness
May your year be one of “ever increasing”, in Jesus’ Name
I absolutely needed this message at this time in my life. Points 4 and 6 in particular speak to me. My husband passed away last year, after only being married for 15 months. Unknown to me he let his life insurance policy lapse and he did not update his insurance and pension with his job. So, needless to say I was like what am I going to do. Even though we were legally married and I am listed on his death certificate I was told we weren’t married long enough to be entitled to his benefits. But as the past few months have been a bunch of no’s I’ve kept going, I’ve kept praying and believing for the impossible. Yesterday, my boss told me that I am getting a “bump” in my raise. Earlier this week I got a letter from the company that handles my husband’s pension that I am entitled his monthly pension and that an account is being set up for me.
I can breathe. I can afford to move to a better community instead of going back to a community that I did not like living in.
With all that said, please pray for my finances, the sneaky and painful grieving process that I’m ready to be done with and my future overall.
Thank you!!!
We thank God with you for the breathing room! I’m sorry to hear of this difficult journey.
May this signs of turning continue, be assured He has appointed you to flourish,
You reminded me of this paraphrase by Eugene Peterson I love these words and turn to the psalms in difficult times
Psalm 61 (The Message)
1-2 God, listen to me shout,
bend an ear to my prayer.
When I’m far from anywhere,
down to my last gasp,
I call out, “Guide me
up High Rock Mountain!”
3-5 You’ve always given me breathing room,
a place to get away from it all,
(The rest is beautiful https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2061&version=MSG
Number 7 is speaking to me God gave me vision for a business but I have no financial means to start the business. I keep getting pulled back to the idea and he has even given me the design and meaning of the business but I am in a very bad financial state where I can not work and haven’t worked in over a year due to my health. My daughter was taking care of everything until she came into some health problems and lost her job. I am afraid of losing my home and my lights being turned off due to a $2600 past due bill. I am asking for prayer for a financial breakthrough and prayer for me and my daughter health. Jabez story resonates with me because I have 3 chronic pain conditions and I suffer with pain every day. A pastor told me a while back that my pain is connected to my gift. I can feel others pain and when o do it makes my pain 100 times worse. Please help me and tell me if this is true and how do I control it.
Hello Allegra, I pray you find the margin, even the tiny one, to take the little steps of anticipation and begin to flourish in your creativity. I know that sensitivity is a gift, but as a gift from (and of) God’s heart and Spirit, know that it’s connected to power, not pain. The story of Jabez prayer is one of redemption and I pray you also experience the joy of this.
And we join together in praying for the provision you need to be revealed, in Jesus’ Name
This is so good Helen, and so timely. As I was reading it I saw that I have allowed myself to become ‘small’. Through discouragement, health battles and a loss of vision I had pulled back where it felt safe. You’ve encouraged me to step out and believe God once again for expansion. Thank you for sharing the prophetic gift.
oh, amen to that Olivia
I’m glad this word has been a blessing to you
May all that fall off your shoulders and may you feel the glorious and secure mantle. All you are, and called to be, and a fresh vision to see yourself walking in His glory, in Jesus’ Name
Thank you so much Helen for sharing this. Prayer of Jabez! Indeed this has been my prayer over the last 2 years. I would pray this prayer as often as I can. Praying as in alignment with God’s prophetic promises over my life, over the assignment, destiny and calling.
No 4 hit the nail in the head, so spot on in my current season. It’s going to be so relevant in the coming months. Will be heading out to a nation totally unknown to me, all by myself in a very long flight. This is not comfortable for me at all. Need to learn a different language, struggling at the moment to discipline myself in learning another language at 66yrs old.
Yes I envisage having to leave my comfort zone, might be living out of suitcases for many months.
No 7, is the core element as I step out in obedience and walk out my faith. It’s got to be God’s grace which is sufficient for me.
Thank you Helen for your writing and sharing from the Father’s heart. I have oftentimes been blessed through your sharing.
That’s a huge move, Amelia,
it’s certainly a comfort to know His grace is with us, grace according to our needs, and circumstances
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Cor 12:9)
and I pray you will know the wings of the Lord are picking you up (Isaiah 40) and giving you that strength that you need, and you will look back on 2026 and reflect with gratitude and your testimony will touch many, in Jesus Name.
And thank you x
Dear Prophetess Calder,
I thoroughly enjoyed your study.on Expansion. No.4 “Expansion Requires Leaving Familiar Ground” resonates with me. I struggle with letting go of what’s comfortable and familiar. Although I realize it’s the only way to receive what God has for me or wants to do in and through me.
Oh yes Karen, I relate to that as well. Thank God that He gives us grace, His enabling power, and courage, by his Spirit.
We don’t have the strength to pull up the tent pegs, but then we find our Heavenly Father is right there with us, and when we lean upon Him, all things become possible.
I pray this will be your testimony
