When we look at a mountain, we see something that is awe-inspiring. It presents a challenge, a summit to conquer.
I believe many of you are faced with giant-sized challenges right now.
Your Father wants you to know that you are not lacking; you are fully empowered in the Spirit!
You are equipped with everything you need to see His purposes take place in that situation.
A Prophetic Prayer Strategy
Sometimes the Holy Spirit gives us a ‘now’ strategy for prayer. [1]
God is highlighting timeless Biblical truths, to aid us in what He is doing right now.
The ‘3 Summit Strategy’ began when my husband and I were faced with a challenging situation, and the Holy Spirit led us to pray this way.
I believe this simple, Biblical approach is timely, and can help you also.
3 Types of Mountains and How to Pray
Here are three symbolic types of mountains we see in Scripture. Understanding the significance of these can greatly help us to pray prophetically. Once we have our Father’s perspective on each of these areas, we can pray with authority, faith and boldness.
1. Mountains to Possess (Conquer)
Ancient strongholds were often built on mountains. The high places were easily fortified, and the approaching enemy was both visible and vulnerable when looked down upon from the heights.
Overcoming these high places was often strategic to conquest of an entire region.
‘And at that time Joshua came and cut off the Anakim from the mountains: from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.’ (Josh 11:21)
The Anakim were an enemy renowned for their great size; they were giants! Overcoming them seemed to be impossible (Deut 9:2).
Today, God wants you to know, no mountain is too large, difficult, or impossible for you to take. You can take and occupy the territory He has called you to possess!
Caleb is an example of someone who boldly declared, ‘Give me this mountain!’
‘Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”
Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.’ ( Joshua 14:12-13 NIV)
Our first question is, ‘Lord, what is the mountain that is to be conquered?’
What is the ground or territory you are giving us?
Perhaps the Holy Spirit is bringing something to mind for you right now.
It may be a relationship. It may be a region; it could be an atmosphere or an environment. There may be people who are destined to come to faith in Christ. God may be speaking to you about health or provision. Your ‘mountain’ may be an opportunity. It may be an arena of business, creativity, education or influence.
God’s purpose for you in that situation may be transformation, breakthrough or advancement.
2. Mountains to be Removed
‘So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.’ (Mark 11:22-23)
Mountains that are destined to be removed, are also a common Biblical theme.
Hear your Father saying, ‘That impossibility you are confronted with is not a dead end. The impossible shall be made possible!
In 1 Corinthians 13:2, Paul spoke of ‘faith that can remove mountains’. The Old Testament prophets wrote,
- “What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’” (Zech 4:7, NIV)
- ‘Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.’ (Isaiah 40:4 NIV)
As we pray about this, our second question is, ‘Father, what is the mountain in this situation that needs to be removed?’
In other words:
- What obstacle is standing in the way of God’s will being done?
- How can we participate with Him in removing that barrier through prayer, declaration and obedient acts?
It’s important to note here, that sometimes we think the ‘mountain’ or problem is a person, when in fact it is a spiritual power base. So, pray and ask for discernment regarding any spiritual warfare that is taking place. [2]
When you come to a mountain, your gaze goes upwards. A summit presents a challenge. But in your place of intimacy with God, no mountain is too great that it cannot be removed.
3. One Mountain to Establish
‘Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’ (Matt 6:10 NIV)
Our third question is, ‘What mountain is being established?’ and our immediate response is, ‘God’s Kingdom!’
In the book of Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar had a prophetic dream of a great statue, parts of which represented consecutive human kingdoms. Then, he saw a rock. Daniel described it like this:
‘While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away without leaving a trace.
But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth.’ (Daniel 2:34-35 NIV)
Today, we recognize that the rock and the mountain represent Jesus Christ and His Kingdom.
By Kingdom, we are speaking of the sphere of God’s rule, His Kingship. And when God’s Kingdom advances in the earth realm, it manifests. (Luke 11:20) God is revealed! His rule and power becomes visible to all.
Let’s be a people who are on fire with a holy vision: to see God’s Kingdom—one mountain—established.
As we pray, we can ask:
- ‘What attributes of Your Kingdom are we to pray, decree and release into this situation?’
- Father how is Your Kingdom to manifest in this situation?
- Show me/us what this looks like from Your perspective
Let’s be passionate to see God’s Kingdom established in our marriages, families, workplaces, ministries, churches. One mountain raised up above all.
When God’s Kingdom is established, the enemy cannot stand. Just as that rock—representing Christ—smashed and took down that statue, nothing else can stand before His Presence (see also 1 Sam 5:1-5).
I pray your cry will be, ‘One Mountain! One Kingdom over all!’

Just as with all prophecy, it is important that any revelation you receive in prayer be weighed up (and checked with a leader when appropriate), to establish that it is genuinely from God. See more here:

You shall winnow them, the wind shall carry them away, And the whirlwind shall scatter them; You shall rejoice in the Lord , And glory in the Holy One of Israel.
