Do you relate to the ministry of discernment, or the ability to see in the spiritual realm?

For many who have the gift of discernment, it can be a lonely journey at times. Discerners may perceive demonic entities, battle with dark forces, and know firsthand what it is like to ‘wrestle with principalities and powers…’ (Eph 6:12)

In the meantime many people around them have no idea of the difficulties discerners are having as they process these encounters.

I remember a time when I cried to God in prayer and said, ‘If this is a ‘gift’, I don’t want it!’ In His loving wisdom (and sense of humor) God sent a prophet, twice during those difficult years to affirm publicly, ‘Helen, you have a gift of discernment!’

Like I did, you may go through times when you don’t know what to do about what you are experiencing. If so, here is some great news:

The very ability that enables you to perceive what is dark, and painful—your God-given gift of discernment—is the same one that gives you access to see and encounter the glory of God, the anointing of the Holy Spirit, and His manifest Presence.

As I often say, ‘the highest use of the gift of discernment is to perceive the Holy Spirit and what He is doing.’

It is time to claim the full inheritance of your spiritual gift of discernment.

Overcome in the Midst of the Battle

The Apostle Paul saw demonic powers operating in people and experienced great persecution, demonically fuelled and inspired.

Not only was Paul able to overcome in the midst of the battle, and set people free from demonic oppression in Jesus’ Name, but he also had open visions and encountered angels and the Heavenly realms.

Be a Glory Watcher

God called the Prophet Ezekiel to see and address the sin of rebellion in God’s people. In the darkness and pain of viewing the idolatry and spiritual adultery of God’s people and foreseeing the outcome of Israel’s sin, Ezekiel saw and felt things that brought him grief. He experienced personal pain and the loss of his wife.

And yet that very calling that caused Ezekiel to encounter conflict and see things painful to bear, was the same calling that was a gateway to see the glory of God.

In the first chapter of Ezekiel, we read of his vision of the throne of God. In chapter ten he sees the cloud of God’s glory leave the temple. Later in a vision he sees God’s glory return to the new temple. He steps into the great River of Life and experiences the harvest and healing that flows from the seat of God’s Presence.

Ezekiel was a watcher of the glory of God. And you can be, too.

Prophet of the Holy Spirit

Ezekiel is known in history as ‘the prophet of the Holy Spirit’ because of his frequent encounters with, and references to, the Spirit of God.

Hear God saying, ‘it’s time to lift your eyes! Get ready to see and encounter My glory as you never have before.’

You will perceive His throne. You will see what He is doing. You will discover God’s glory in unexpected places—even in the dark places.

You will see, with wonder, that no place is so dark that God’s glory cannot visit it. No bondage is too great that the power of the Spirit in Jesus’ Name cannot break it. No situation is without hope.

In the worst of circumstances, your eyes will be opened and you will see what the Spirit is doing.

Ezekiel’s intimacy with the Spirit was remarkable. Is God also calling you to be known as an intercessor, watchman, or prophet ‘of the Holy Spirit?’ Say ‘yes’ to Him today. And always remember:

The same gift that reveals the darkness, sees the Light that casts shadows away.

  1. I seem to be a mismash of Intercessor, Prophet, Seer. I actually would really like to figure out my place/office. I was awakened by the prophetic books of Rick Joyner. I am subscribed to your Newsletter via E-Mail and havevread your free Ebook. I have been praying to God to send me a mentor, even if it’s just online. How do I figure out what I am?

    1. Hi Samantha, yes even though there are clear classifications of gifts in Scripture, we each have a unique gift mix – your sounds very much like me too.
Be willing to go on a journey, enjoy the seeking and the unfolding over time, but also love where you’re at right now. I think it’s ok, good in fact, to not have it all figured out at once 🙂

  2. Ntebele Jacob Motsoeneng

Hi Helen my name is Ntebele Jacob Motsoeneng and I believe in God I am a believer and God have entrusted me with the gift of Prophecy,Apostolic and a gift of miracle, and that is why I am so interested in growing my gifts especially the gift of Prophecy, some times I just feel like being left out, lonely,my life is stagnated, going round in circle,No progress, please pray with me.

    1. Hi Ntebele, are you in South Africa? Your name sounds very South African :-). Have you read Helen’s book setting your prophetic gift free? If you would like we can pray together for Freedom. I think Celiwe who posted above is also South African. 🙂

      1. Hi, I’m also South African but based in France. I am a discerner and I also have been told that I have a calling into the prophetic ministry. I go to a small English speaking church here. Mainly serving expats and students, and there is no one to mentor me regarding spiritual gifts. Many people are still very uncomfortable with them. So it gets very frustrating for me. I have decided to step out in faith by opening what I will call “Tea, Cookies and Prayer” – A Christian Prayer Room. Where people can come for prayer and Bible study while enjoying tea, coffee and cookies. I have a few people that I have been ministering to while I go about my daily business, but I would like to have a dedicated space for ‘soul care’. Please pray for me regarding this project, because I have now seen that in the area I am planning to open the prayer room, there is a coffee shop that offers divination, fortune telling, hypnosis, etc. And when walking past I sense a very strong demonic activity. So now more than ever I have to get this prayer room open because as children of God we have the responsibility to destroy the kingdom of darkness. Please also pray with me regarding growth, complete freedom and for this particular project taking shape right now – and look out for the Facebook page. Thank you and sorry for the long message!

        1. Wow Tumi, that sounds wonderful! I pray you are blessed in this project which is very much needed, light in the darkness!

          1. That’s AMAZING!! Last weekend I told a friend of mine I want to open a prayer Cafe here in Aachen. I’m originally from SA but living in Germany. This is no coincidence. If you would like to pray together my email

          2. Hi Samantha, this is amazing! Wow! We need to talk, I’m sending you an email and my number!

        2. Awesome – let me know once you two have connected and Samantha, I’ll remove your email from here so the spammers don’t find it. <3

          1. Thank you Helen, I have sent Samantha an email, so you can remove her email.

I have a question for you regarding being a discerner. I often sense the presence of demonic spirits very close (I also do sense the Holy Spirit at certain times). But I am a bit buffled by the demonic spirits. I went to a deliverance minister a few months ago, who discerned witchcraft spirits and prayed for me. She also told me about my call into the Prophetic ministry and prayed impartation for healing and deliverance. So I am just wondering if as a discerner can one sense spirits on other people or can demonic spirits follow us around? Or is it that they are all around and as a discerner I am bound to sense them? On the other hand I have been going through the most intense spiritual warfare lately, and I would appreciate prayer. Especially regarding stepping into my call.
Thank you very much Helen, and may the Lord bless you for the work and dedication to teaching and equipping us. Blessings, Tumi
ps: Please let me know how do I get hold of your book that everyone is talking about?

          2. We are connected. You can remove my email Helen. Looking forward to your next newsletter.

    2. Hi Ntebele, praying for you now and agreeing with you for progress, if there is a key or action to take, I pray Holy Spirit reveals it to you. And may you know His Divine acceleration to shift you quickly forward.

  3. Thanks very much Helen…….. You really know my calling. Am already an intercessor, serving the Lord in this ministry – Intercessory Army for Christ (aka. Warmen) at Awka Anambra state Nigeria. I have been praying for this gift of discernment, and I know that God will answer me one day. Thanks so much for your revelation.

    1. Hello Tochukwu, the ministry of prayer and intercession is powerful. May you be anointed and empowered as you pray for Nigeria and your region!

  5. Stephanie James

My name is Stephanie. I had a personal moment with God and he told me that I am a discerner. I’ve read your book a couple of times Unlocking the gift of Dicerment. I just feel so alone in this because I’m new to this. Im not sure if my church knows. Sometimes I feel as if they do and I go through instances with people. My thoughts are flooded and I feel so judgemental. I have never judged anyone and now it’s like I know peoples true intent. I know when people are being fake. Is this part of this. My mind won’t stop. I need a friend. A guide. Someone who knows. Is there anyone I can speak to? I thank you for who you are in Christ.

    1. Hi Stephanie, wow I’ve sure been there, but have been able to break through by God’s grace. The key God has given to me is to lean into the prophetic gift and the prophetic heart, which is the heart of the Father. Seeing the gold in people, seeing what Father has created and called them to be. This is the balance to the discernment ability.
