Lazarus: God is Giving you Hope and a Fresh Beginning

Just as Lazarus’ name means, “Whom God helps”, you are the one God helps! Today, the Lord is removing lingering questions and doubts from past events.

Recently as I was praying, I saw a huge warehouse, and a sign on it said, “Clearance!”
With it, came a sense of urgency, to surrender our lives to Jesus.
God has marked some items—that have occupied our lives like furniture—for removal.
These include priorities that were good once but are not His best for us right now.
And it is time to release these past treasures, to receive the new life He has for us.

“Let Me Take Care of This!”

I saw an angel with a giant broom—and I realized the vision spoke of God at work around us, sweeping out His house.

As I meditated on this, I heard the Lord say, “I am making room!” [1]

“Clearance” is joyful news! Clearing out the old makes way for the new!
Yet at times, we wonder how to clean up the clutter that has built up around us.
Or, there may be parts of our lives that painful experiences have soiled.
And we don’t know where to begin.

You are Defined by Love

But the Holy Spirit is moving in this space—“Let Me take care of this!” says the Lord.

Today, “clearance” speaks of hope and a new beginning. The Lord wants you to know that you are a miracle—and this is how you are known in Heaven:

  • You are defined by the love of your Saviour
  • And by the power of God

Lazarus was a Living Testimony

Lazarus was the much-loved brother of Mary and Martha, who fell sick and died. [2]
But his destiny on earth was not over.

For four days, he lay in a tomb, but when Jesus called, “Lazarus come forth!” life entered his body.
And Lazarus walked out—a living testimony of Christ’s resurrection power.

From a Tomb to a Table

In a short time, Lazarus goes from lying in a tomb to feasting at a table!

For in the final glimpse of Lazarus—in John chapter 12—he sits at a table, at a celebration held in Jesus’ honor!
His sister Martha is hosting—and Mary is at Jesus’ feet, pouring out fragrant oil from her alabaster box.

This party takes place during the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion.
By now, Lazarus’ story has been passed around. And many people have gathered to Jesus and believed in Him as a result.

But Lazarus is also in the eye of the storm—at the center of the controversy that will lead up to Jesus’ crucifixion.

A Last Touch of Lazarus’ Portrait

And John tells us,
“When all the people heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.
Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too, for it was because of him that many of the people had deserted them and believed in Jesus.” (John 12:9,11, NLT)

So much attention is swirling around Lazarus in this final window into his life.
And this is the last we see of him—a last touch of the portrait—Lazarus is at the house at Bethany, dining with Jesus.

Today, Lazarus steps out of the pages of Scripture and reminds us—that no matter how far we have fallen, we also have a place at the table.
We too have a Redeemer.

What Matters Most about Lazarus

Recently, it stood out to me that we never do learn the details of what Lazarus was sick with!
On the other side of Lazarus’ resurrection, what mattered was not what had caused his death. But the One who had brought him to life.
And his purpose—which was to live for God’s glory! As John writes, “It was because of him that many people…believed in Jesus.”

Today, Jesus, the One who declared “I am the Resurrection and the Life”, has new life and freedom for you.
You too can receive His grace to begin again.

A Part of God’s Army

Resurrection was also the theme when the Holy Spirit took Ezekiel to a valley of many dry bones (Ezekiel 37).
And perhaps—since they arise a mighty army and are located together in a valley—we can assume they died in battle.
Yet, like Lazarus, their cause of death doesn’t even warrant a mention!
What matters, is how and who has brought them to life.
Along with their purpose, which was to be a part of God’s army.

For the word of the Lord changes everything.
The word of the Lord—along with the breath of the Lord—has resurrection power.

Like Lazarus, You can say, “Jesus has Done This!”

Today, by faith, see yourself in that place that Lazarus occupied, at the table with Jesus.
On the other side of a move of God, where all of the questions fall away.
Here, it’s no longer what happened and why.
But only, “Who did this?”

And you realize, Jesus is here—Jesus has done this!
He has healed me and brought me back to life.

And just as Lazarus’ name means, “Whom God helps”, you are the one God helps! [3]
“Clearance”: The old has gone and the new has come. Now, you live for His glory.

And this is your resurrection story.

Glory be to God for this timely message. I know it’s all talking to me. I am presently in fasting and prayer for restoration of all the enemy stole from me: Ministry (I am a Pastor in Nigeria, I was attacked spiritually became sick, in the process church closed down), money, health, relationships, time, opportunities and fellowship.
Please pray for me: I believe before the expiration of this 40 days fasting and prayer, all the old things in my life will be swept away in complete clearance, and a new beginning, dining with the Lord becomes my story.
    I love the prophetic ministry.

  3. Hi Helen thank you so much for this encouragement. This felt soo timely and spot on.
The mention of doubt & shame has been so heavy and had written poems of lament today and continued to be reminded that God was with me though even though I felt so weighed.
Simultaneously I felt a strong sense of The Holy Spirit power taking over where I felt I couldn’t speak for hours but just allow Him to fill me while I waited.
I have also felt the echoes recently to trust Him for His best for me at least 3x times. I have been convicted to not go back in the same work be cause I know that’s not His best for me.
I have prayer for a relationship I’m currently in not knowing to continue because I felt a sense that this is not God’s desire but I also feel like I need to be committed to loving well because I see great potential.
The mention that I am the one God helps helped bring solace to my heart while feeling less understood in my desire to be pure and to glorify His name in all I do.

The mention of resurrection leaped in my spirit. There was a song I heard tonight resurrecting and that breathed life into my being.

I also felt the need to pay attention this is the 3rd time recently that the story of Lazarus death was brought to my attention that permeated my memory. I was actually helping co-lead a bible class for students and I felt the desire to speak up more about the power of what Jesus did and wanting to emphasis that He waited intentionally but didn’t. Later I had another opportunity as as that portion about Lazarus death was shared in our group message. I wanted to share but I didn’t. It permeated in my mind this little four year old who hadn’t said anything but instead cried the up into that point it related to the story a kid was asking about death and the co leader was explaining what happens when we die when we trust in Jesus and suddenly this little four year who has been crying excitedly yelled out I Trust in Jesus!

I truly have been so encouraged and it does my heart beyond good to remember I am defined by the Love of my savior & power of my savior when I have been flood with feeling so weak. My desire has been and is to just bring Him glory in all that I do.

Thanks for reading I appreciate it. I know it was a bit. I am so very thankful!

  4. Pastor Ibrahim Sillah

Hello Helen ,thank you for doing a great work through the Holy Spirit as He inspired you to speak to our lives. Anytime I received your message I see myself in it . Thank you . Please pray with me as I am trusting God or divine healing. I see what am going through now as the beginning of a new thing God is going to do . Just like Lazarus after 4 days in the grave God opened a new page in his life . I strongly believe after this my life will never be the same again .
    Mr regards,
    Pastor Ibrahim

  5. Thankyou Helen!
A very timely word indeed as having come across this quote author unknown, “if an egg is broken by outside force, life ends, if broken by an inside force, life begins. Great things always begin from inside”. The “image in my mind” of eggs being broken, reminded my of the the two tombs being broken open and I have been meditating on both tomb incidents…. Lazarus and Jesus ….. and the differences between them… when Jesus was on the outside of the tomb the stone was rolled away by other people then the new life Jesus brought was visible, and Lazarus although still bound was alive but needed to be loosed to complete freedom. When Jesus was on the inside of the tomb the power of God brought life inside the tomb and that same power then moved stone, and Jesus full of new life was already up and walking about in the garden freely when Mary and the others found him. It’s hard to put into words what “I saw” and how it relates to the quote but I hope you get the picture! The “Warehouse clearance” was just a wow moment this morning(Good Friday in the UK), as a 40 days of prayer I have been following for lent had a broken link today and that really annoyed me so I spent time reading your word instead…. Which really blessed me. Thankyou… for you faithfulness and your timing…
My warehouse definitely needs a clearance! The last 6 months have been very challenging as my eldest son Ben (30) asked if he could “move in” with me my husband Nick( not his dad) and his younger brother Joe (27) who has been with us for 6 years. Ben is a grown man but wasn’t married to his non Christian partner and has no dependants and no financial commitments so no complications in that respect….. but… our relationship is not an easy one and to accommodate him the entire contents of my crafting storage room is now in my lounge! So I literally understand the clearance metaphor physically and internally and my hearts desire is for peaceful, respectful relationships between us all as we are now all “family” albeit…. Blended and for some “quality time” together with my eldest son…

  6. Just got back from a trip where the Lord did some amazing spring cleaning and filled me up to overflowing with His goodness. Been struggling with how to explain what He did. After reading your post I realized that the details don’t matter. It’s who did this! I’m continuing to feast at his table. Thank you so much!
