Are you concerned about the spiritual atmosphere around your life? Your discernment is a powerful gift!
Yet I frequently hear from Christians who struggle with what they discern.
They may be experiencing physical, mental, or emotional strain from spiritual warfare and demonic encounters.
When these people come across Enliven Blog, they are relieved to hear from someone who has experienced similar problems.
The Atmosphere of the Holy Spirit
It is true that in my early years of growing in discernment, negative atmospheres affected me.
Yet that is not my experience today.
Today, I live with a continual awareness of the Holy Spirit being with, in, and upon me. I know the atmosphere I carry is one of “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” (Rom 14:17)
This is my usual experience, and if it is ever anything otherwise, I can quickly make my way back into that awareness of God’s Presence.
- It is simply a matter of doing whatever it takes to get back into a place of reliance upon what Jesus has done for me. (Col 2:13-15) This may involve confession or repentance. It may include an act of obedience. Freedom may come as I renounce something. But most often, I am helped by simply returning to a position of trust in God.
I know that peace and the experience of God’s Presence is my inheritance as a Christian—and it is yours too.
Take the Weather with You
‘Everywhere you go, always take the weather with you’ sings one of our favorite New Zealand bands. [1]
As people who discern and sense atmospheres, we have a choice.
We can come under the dark clouds or, we can rise above them. Better yet, we can participate with the Holy Spirit in shifting the atmosphere.
Determine that you will not be like a thermometer, going up and down with the temperature. People around you (and their issues) will not affect you.
You can be a thermostat and, you can set the temperature. Take the weather with you. And the weather forecast in God’s Kingdom is “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” (Rom 14:17) [2]

Excellent blog Helen. Thank you.
This is our testimony of how real and genuine the presence and atmosphere of the Holy Spirit is;
At our church on Monday night this week we attended the regular prayer meeting. The presence of the Holy Spirit was very active and strong as we worshiped our Heavenly Father. The following day I was the Veterans Hospital as a patient. My wife accompanied me.
While in an open clinic setting with several people in the near area. The presence of the Holy Spirit manifested and filled the atmosphere of the area. The Holy Spirit began to bubble up in my soul with a prophetic word for a male nurse. The word was very real and my wife could see and feel spiritually what was occurring. The male nurse came to the cubicle where we were and in a direct and natural voice I spoke over him as the Holy Spirit gave me the prophetic word. My wife had retrieved paper and pen and wrote as the prophetic word was spoken. The word was of God’s love and the usefulness of this nurse in the kingdom of God and encouraged him to step further into the grace of God. The nurse began to visibly receive the word as tears filled his eyes. He received the word and stated I am a believer and was very thankful for the word. My wife later gave him a written copy of the prophetic word.
The nurse then returned to the nurse station area and began to engage in conversation with several nurses and staff about what just occurred. Several of the nurses then began to say they were believers. A female nurse then came to us and we engaged in a very anointed conversation about the real and active presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. She became visibly touched by the Holy Spirit as we discussed how our Savior is the same yesterday, today and forever. The power of our Heavenly Father creates atmospheres of His Holy presence beyond our fleshly understanding.
We were asked if we would be wiling to speak to a group of christian medical staff at the hospital.
This is a real an recent and active example of the strength of the Holy Spirit, that may humbly serve as an example of the power and glory of the God we serve. As believers we should be willing to step out in faith and that often requires us to move out of our comfort zone in order to be submissive to the Holy Spirit.
May God be honored.
Wow! I love it. Such an awesome story Russ, may this become even more ‘commonplace’ for you as the Spirit bubbles over through you!
May God Bless you the more in the name Of Jesus!
Thank you, Barungi!
Grateful to have come upon this. I am Christian of 20+ years and have had many of the pre-Christian experiences you described in your blog. I am also A recovering alcoholic, set free. I am now working with many women and trying to use the gift to help others find freedom in the Truth and point them and point them back to Him. This can be confusing. So thank you for giving me the tools to further kingdom purpose. -R
