You have received a personal prophecy or prophetic guidance from God about your life, family, business, church or ministry. You have prayed about it, weighed it up and leaders have confirmed the prophetic insight. You are excited and filled with faith at this genuine word from God.
But then, instead of the quick fulfillment you anticipated, you enter a time of trial. It seems as though the opposite of your prophetic word is taking place.
- You believed a loved one was going to break through in his or her relationship with God. But instead, their hearts seem to be harder.
- You were anticipating breakthrough in a financial situation—but now you are being stretched even further.
- That door you expected to open remains stubbornly closed.
You may be asking, ‘What is God doing? Or is this the enemy at work? How should I respond?’
Why is the Opposite of Your Prophetic Word Taking Place?
For those of us who have journeyed for many years in a prophetic lifestyle, pursuing the purposes of God, this situation is a very familiar one.
There are times when a prophecy, prophetic dream or guidance from our Heavenly Father leads to His promise being fulfilled quickly. However often, there is a delay between the prophetic word being given and the time it comes to pass. During a delay, it may even seem as though the very reverse of what God has promised is taking place.
If you can relate to this, here are 4 Biblical reasons why the opposite of your prophetic word may be happening:
1. God is Allowing this Circumstance to Test Your Faith
‘Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”’ (Rom 4:18)
Abraham believed God’s promise when there was absolutely no physical possibility of it coming to pass. That was the point in which his faith was manifested in God’s sight.
When it is physically impossible and yet you still believe God’s promises, that is the very point at which your faith has reached its maturity. Rejoice—it is time to give birth to the promise.
In Hebrews 11 we read of those who ‘through faith, obtained promises’. (Heb 11:33) These are men and women who went through great hardships and persecution, and yet continued to say yes to the will of God and see their circumstances through the lens of faith.
At what point is faith realized? At the point where there is no physical possibility of prophetic fulfilment. So if you are facing an impossible situation where only the power of God can bring about the fulfilment of your prophetic dream, rejoice. It may be impossible in the natural realm, but ‘with God all things are possible!’ (Matt 19:26)
2. The Principle of Death and Resurrection is at Work
‘They bruised his feet with shackles, his neck was put in irons, till what he foretold came to pass, till the word of the Lord proved him true.’ (Ps 105:18-19)
Joseph had prophetic dreams about being in a position of rulership. However, for many years his life seemed to be headed in a contrary direction. What could be more opposite to ruling than being a slave? From slavery, he descended even further—into imprisonment. And yet that was the very launching pad for Joseph’s prophetic dreams of ruling to come true.
There is a Biblical principle of a vision from God going through a ‘death’ time—a winter of the promise when it seems the opposite of the prophetic dream is taking place. But take heart. Spring is on its way!
God waited until Abraham and Sarah were well past the time of being able to conceive before Isaac, God’s promised son, was born.
‘Without weakening in his faith, [Abraham] faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.’ (Rom 4:19-21)
David was anointed to rule by the Prophet Samuel—but first he became a fugitive on the existing king’s ‘most wanted’ list. Moses had to die to his calling for 40 years before God sent him to deliver Israel.
If the opposite of God’s dream for your life is happening right now, take heart from the examples of heroes of the faith. As you stay on track in your heart attitude and relationship with God, His resurrection power is coming through for you.
3. Your Prophecy was Preparation for Spiritual Warfare
‘Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well…’ (1 Tim 1:18)
Paul instructed Timothy to recall personal prophecies as a means of being empowered in the battles he faced.
Your Father knew that a battle was going to be up ahead for you, and so He has given you a weapon to wage warfare with. Prophecy is a part of His Heavenly arsenal.
During the years on the run, David was strengthened and encouraged by his knowledge of God’s plan for his future, through Samuel’s anointing and his personal relationship with God.
So if the opposite of your prophetic word is taking place and you recognize that there is spiritual contention for God’s plans for your life, family, business or ministry, take up that prophecy as a weapon. Put the will of God and the Word of God in your mouth and start to shout.
- This situation WILL be turned around
- Those finances WILL be turned around
- Your health WILL be turned around
- That person’s life WILL be touched by God
- That promise WILL be fulfilled
- You WILL rise and do what God has called you to do
God’s plan is still on track and ultimately those strategies of the enemy will fail.
4. God will Receive the Greater Glory When the Word is Fulfilled.
‘These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.’ (1 Peter 1:7)
Determine that your testimony will be—I held fast to the prophetic call of God on my life. I kept a song of praise on my lips through the times of barrenness and when it seemed the opposite was taking place.
The greater the trial, the greater the impossibility, the greater the glory that goes to God as His prophetic purpose in fulfilled.
God is already at work in the background to fulfill the promise, even when you can’t see what He is doing. He is lining up circumstances, people. At the right time, Divine acceleration will come to bear and that prophetic promise will be fulfilled.
If a prophetic word has not come to pass and you are questioning whether it was truly from God, or it is bearing bad fruit in your life (such as long term discouragement), it is time to test and weigh it up again. Read this article: Dealing with Prophetic Disappointment
