Second Wind: The Power to Keep Going

Second Wind, PropheticA few miles from the finish line, the marathon runner is out of breath and exhausted—the end seemingly beyond reach. But then, something shifts. Strength returns. The lift of energy enables him to reach the finish line at peak performance.

It is a phenomenon we know as ‘the second wind’ [1] and it has come to mean ‘a new strength or energy to continue something that is an effort.’

Today I believe God is saying, “I am imparting to you the fresh wind of my Spirit, and with it, new inspiration to continue to stay on course for what I have for you.”

The Second Wind of God’s Encouragement

‘Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.’ (Heb 12:1b-2a)

Perseverence is a powerful expression of faith and crucial to breakthrough. We are called to a lifestyle of perseverance.

But God is not like an intimidating sports coach, waiting to rebuke you when you falter in the race of life. Jesus is at the finish line cheering you on and saying, ‘Keep going! Keep going!’ His Spirit is within and upon you, available to provide everything you need.

If you need a ‘second wind’, receive the cheer of Jesus’ encouragement into your heart today.

The Second Wind of Recalling God’s Past Faithfulness

Following God’s instructions to Joshua, the Israelite army has marched once around the walled city of Jericho daily for 6 days. Now, on the 7th day, they are to march around the city 7 times. (Joshua 6)

Imagine being a soldier, and you have already marched 6 times around Jericho on that 7th day. Right now, you may be a little weary. And yet, there is still more marching ahead of you.

It doesn’t make any natural sense. Why the delay of time? Why the incomprehensible marching, using physical strength that you need to reserve for the battle ahead?

Sometimes, life is like that. It seems like you are circling the walls of impossibility. High. Impenetrable.

Now is the time to receive the second wind.

Look back on the faithfulness of your Father. Remember the last miracle God performed—the one where you crossed the Jordan in flood season? (Joshua 3) You are one circuit away from your breakthrough.

The Second Wind of Power to Pray

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.’ (Luke 18:1)

Six times, Elijah has sent his servant to look for the first signs of God’s answer to his prayer for rain. But the sky remains a stubborn blue.

‘Lord, you have given the word. I know this is your plan. Here I am in Your Presence, and I’m not giving up until I have the answer.’

Elijah puts his head down to the ground again and prays. Now, he sends his servant for the 7th time.

“I see a cloud. But it’s only very small—the size of a man’s hand.”

A tiny puff of cloud. And yet that is all Elijah needs to be certain that God’s answer has arrived. Now he must act quickly on God’s answer. (1 Kings 18:41-45)

Father is speaking to someone today—“Don’t stop short, keep praying. Receive the second wind of My Spirit and pray again. Rejoice at the small signs, for My answer is on its way.”

See what God’s begun as already done—see with the eye of faith.

The Second Wind of God’s Grace for Forgiveness

Isaac has been forced to change locations, and the effort of moving his family, servants and flocks is enormous. (Gen 26) His servants have been hard at work—re-opening wells that his father Abraham once used and discovering fresh sources of water.

However, locals contend that the water belongs to them.

Remarkably, when dispute over position and property comes up, Isaac is willing to release and move on. There are new wells ahead.

Have you been in a place of dispute? Release the offense and move on.

Receive the second wind of God’s grace. Forgive and keep moving. You will then discover your heart is free to engage with the new thing your Father is doing—for He has something better ahead of you.

Don’t Settle for ‘Enough’ when ‘Encounter’ and ‘Enlargement’ are still Ahead.

The season of contention is over. Isaac is now free to settle in Rehoboth (meaning ‘room’), the place where he has freedom to live. (Gen 26:16-22) But his Divine appointment is still ahead of him.

Room enough, and yet there is still more. In order to receive the fullness of God’s blessing, Isaac has to forge ahead to God‘s appointed place for him, and that is Beersheba.

Beersheba is significant, and not just because it has access to water. It is a place appointed for Divine encounter. Not only Isaac, but also in times to come Jacob, Hagar and Elijah will have significant encounters with God in Beersheba. And in centuries to come it will be known as the southernmost border of Israel. [2]

Maybe you have worked hard and are finally positioned in a place where there is ‘room enough’, but God is saying, ‘I have more for you.’ Will you be satisfied with ‘enough’? Or will you press on to the place of encounter and enlargement?

Today, hear your Father saying, “Don’t settle for less than the fullness of what I have for you. It has cost you to get where you are today. But I have still more for you up ahead. Receive the second wind of My Spirit and keep going, for My best is yet to come.”

To God be the Glory for His Matchless ways. He is so faithful to confirm himself to us!

He knows the thoughts he has for us and is no shorter than his word.

I am right now at this very place and am truly grateful for the people of God, such as yourself, Prophetess Helen, who are the perfecters to the Body of Christ

This is a confirming word for me of great truth and importance and I am sure, because I know that God’s way is perfect, that it is timely sent “just for me”, both as His child and His Chosen Seer for such a time as this.

I so very much appreciate your faithfulness to the the prophetic teaching ministry, for the understanding of it and it’s necessity is greatly under served and needed in the Body.
Thank you again. You are a great grace to my life!
May our Heavenly Father continue to bless you mightily for the sake of his Son and our need for the greater witness of His Life in us! Amen
Also, the website is linked to a legacy work of love that i was led to create in honor of my sister who was called home in 2011 on Christmas Day. Please share it with others if you will.Thank you

  9. danny

last week GOD gave me a name “PRAISE CITY”and also said “BEHOLD I HAVE CALLED THEE TO WORK IN MY VINEYARD,YOU ARE NO MORE A SERVANT BUT A SON”..I WANT YOU TO BE DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS..ma please help me out

  10. ries

Wow. Really believe this is a word for me and mine today. It describes the place we have all arrived today, where it has just all become too much-even our daughter was in tears over pushing through one more minute in her circumstances… when i said ‘that’s ok honey… God maybe giving us all a rest day..I’ve given up too today…but just trust that He will give strength tomorrow that will erase the lapse today. Just lay it down today..there is a time for every season’ but i didnt believe it for myself… i have plodded on through my day (at a slower pace, discouraged and in despair.).. and then i saw your post! In our circumstances right now we are actually very close to a finish line moment and then a very unknown future… and today we have all felt stuck… Praise the Lord for his eternal persective shared today in these words and scriptures… how on earth do you know the right one to post Helen…except i trust through His prompting! Thankyou!

    1. Helen Calder Post author

Hi Ries, so glad the post has been a blessing to you today. Receive the sweet, fresh breeze of the Spirit over your heart and soul. Receive His rest. Your future is very much in His hands, and you have found favour with the King. (reference to Esther 🙂 have just been working today on a study from Esther on favour, one of the great themes of the book… )

    Perfect timing!
I am suffering a foot injury (inflamed tendon) that doesn’t want to progress and heal. I can’t run. Running is the second way I deal with the world. (Jesus is the first) Running is hugely important! But God has assured me that running is more important to Him than it is to me.
But I am stuck working through an injury when I know He can heal it perfectly. Timing and process.
This article felt like a hug. Thanks.

    1. Helen Calder Post author

Thanks for leaving the note. Praying right now for an accelerated healing for the tendon, in Jesus’ Name.
I’m so glad this article has been an encouragement for you. God is good!
