Prayer Awakening: How to Pray With the Holy Spirit

I believe a prayer awakening is upon us, and it is only beginning.

And it’s an unusual prophetic picture, but the word I sense God highlighting is this:
Aqueduct.

  • An aqueduct is simply a channel through which water is carried from one place to another.

For all who long for a move of the Holy Spirit, this is a word of encouragement.
It’s about what is possible as we participate with the Holy Spirit in prayer.

It’s also a reminder that this kind of prayer is neither a task nor a formula.
But a revelation.
And a relationship.

“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness…we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us …” (Romans 8:26, NLT)

And here’s the key:
That we realize not only what we’re praying for but Who we are praying with.

The Holy Spirit.
God, in His very Person, presence, and power.

A Prayer Awakening

Prayer Awakening: How to Pray with the Holy Spirit, text on photo of a reservoirThe insight about a prayer awakening has come to me at a time when I’m feeling stretched.
And I realize many of us are experiencing this.

  • Unexpected responsibilities
  • Hidden challenges
  • And spiritual warfare

Maybe you can relate.

In 2 Samuel 5:6–9, David stands on the threshold of Jerusalem.

This is his God-given destiny.
The Jebusites believe their stronghold is completely secure.
And no wonder:
Even Joshua in his day was unable to dislodge them! (Joshua 15:63).

Before him stands this fortress of “impossible.”

And the Jebusites mock David, saying:
“You shall not come in here; but the blind and the lame will repel you” (2 Samuel 5:6).
They are claiming that even the weakest among them can defend the city.

Our enemy wants us to believe that the walls, barriers, and resistance in front of us are too high, too thick, and too strong.
But our God has made a way.
And He has given us Divine access.

David instructs his men to go up through the water tunnel to gain access (2 Samuel 5:8).
It’s an unexpected point of entry, associated with the city’s water supply.

Right now, many of us are standing on such a threshold.
What is ahead of you cannot be reached by greater human effort.

There is another access—a hidden channel of prayer.

My Personal Prayer Awakening

It reminds me of 17 years ago, when I first started this blog.
When I went through burnout, I would go to a reservoir to worship and be alone with God.
Being.

I was having my own prayer awakening.
Discovering that prayer could be unlike anything I’d experienced before.

These were years of drought in Victoria.
At that time, the low water levels at Cardinia Reservoir reflected the state of my soul.

But here’s the thing I realize now.

I didn’t know what I was looking at!
Because Cardinia Reservoir is designed to be like a warehouse.
An intermediary.

It doesn’t just collect water from its own catchment.
Water is piped there from elsewhere.
From another reservoir.
And more recently, from a coastal desalination plant.

From there, that reservoir supplies drinking water to the south-eastern parts of Melbourne.

Deep underwater are pipes and equipment.
And through that hidden infrastructure, the water flows onward.

Always working.
Never failing.

Today, hear God say,
“Beloved, I never fail. I am always with you.”

A Picture of Prayer Awakening

As I’ve prayed this week, this picture has stood out.

The channels of prayer may be unseen.
But through them, a generation is receiving water to drink.

What is going to be accomplished can only be done by Him.
And with Him.

Prayer is not only a container we bring to God to be filled.
It can be a conduit through which God’s power flows.

And when you catch a glimpse of this reality, prayer shifts.

Here are five ways we can pray with the Holy Spirit.
Each one is a gift of grace, flowing to us and through us.

Five Ways to Pray With The Holy Spirit

1. Pray WITH Relationship

We can approach God directly as our Father. Prayer flows from intimate relationship with God.

“Now we call him, ‘Abba, Father.’ For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.” (Romans 8:15b-16, NLT)

2. Pray WITH Revelation

We pray with insight into God’s Kingdom, His Word, His promises, and our identity in Christ.

“Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10, NKJV)

As you pray, the Holy Spirit will reveal specifically how God wants you to respond.

3. Pray WITH Faith

Revelation gives faith something tangible to respond to.
As 1 John 5:14–15 promises, when we know He hears us, we know that we have what we have asked of Him.
Faith has something to say—we receive by faith, and then we respond by faith!

4. Pray WITH Jesus’ Name and Authority

We do not represent ourselves when we pray. We re-present Jesus and carry His divine authority.

Jesus said, “Whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you” (John 15:16, NKJV).

5. Pray WITH the Power of the Holy Spirit

Jesus said, “Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8b)

What comes in is meant to flow out.
We receive from the Holy Spirit.
Faith rises in response to what He gives us.
And His power flows through us.

“Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”(When he said ‘living water,’ he was speaking of the Spirit…)” (John 7:38–39, NLT)

If you are running low, receive the grace of God in your prayer life.
For you can pray WITH rest.
Simply lean in.
It is enough to be with Him.
And drink.
For from that place, the flow will come.

Your Part in a Prayer Awakening

What does it look like for you to pray with the Holy Spirit today?

Look at what you are currently praying for, and ask yourself: Who am I praying with?
What is God giving you right now that you can receive from Him and release?

It only takes a spark.
One person catches this revelation, then another, realizing, “I didn’t know prayer could be like this!”

What rest and relief.
We do not need to manufacture power.
Turn your heart toward Him right now, and receive His abundant grace.
And let Him make you an aqueduct of His glory.

17th Anniversary

Photo of Helen Calder 2026I have just passed my 17th anniversary of blogging.
And I know it’s only by God’s grace that we are here!
I’m so grateful for the wonderful team of people who have journeyed with me.
Special mention to my husband, Malcolm.
To my board, and especially David and Margaret McCracken, for all of your faith, fatherhood, and ongoing support.
And to my readers who are a constant joy.

We have a wonderful community.

Things have been a little harder lately, with extra family commitments. At times, it’s been difficult to reply, and even to write.
So thank you for your love and grace.
I love you all.
