New Sound: How to Boldly Release Your Prophetic Worship

God is releasing a new sound in this generation.
And He is inviting many of us to be a part of it.

David wrote,

“He has put a new song in my mouth…praise to our God;
Many will see it and fear.
And will trust in the LORD”
(Psalm 40:3, NKJV)

Many of us need the comfort and courage of this promise.
God is still stirring new songs in the hearts of His people that will impact nations.

Discovering the New Sound

New Sound: How to Boldly Release Your Worship, text on green background depicting harp and cymbalsIt is not about copying someone else’s expression.
But about discovering the gifts and voice He has already placed within you.

To awaken to this:

You are God’s new instrument.

  • And He is worthy of a sound of praise that only you can bring.

The Worship God Deserves

Recently, I came across a book about prayer and worship that was hidden on my shelf for years.
As I browsed, this verse seemed to shout!

“…four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand praised the LORD with musical instruments, “which I made,” said David, “for giving praise.”
(1 Chronicles 23:5, NKJV)

The scale was breathtaking.
Then one sentence gripped me:

“for some reason, David felt that the existing instruments of his day were simply not enough to do justice to the worship God deserved.
So he created new musical instruments.”
Dick Eastman, Pathways of Delight [1]

The thought captivated me.
David believed that the worship and glory of God deserved more than yesterday’s instruments!

The Search for a New Sound

Whether David created entirely new instruments or adapted existing ones, we don’t know.
But Amos 6:5 does refer to those who “invent for yourselves musical instruments like David”

Now, I wanted to know,
Was there an instrument that first appeared in Israel’s formal worship under David?

And there was one.

That instrument was cymbals!

Cymbals were already known in the ancient world [2].
But David pioneered a new sound of prophetic worship through them.

And the first use of cymbals was in the transporting of the Ark to Jerusalem.

A New Sound of Worship

We read:

“So all Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant with shouts of joy, the blowing of rams’ horns and trumpets, the crashing of cymbals, and loud playing on harps and lyres.” (1 Chronicles 15:28, NLT)

“And David danced before the LORD with all his might…” (2 Samuel 6:14a, NLT)

And we see David coming into Jerusalem, dancing with all his strength.

To a new sound.
Cymbals.

These instruments were clashing, loud, and sharp.
They were powerful and resonant.

Cymbals were disruptive.
Unexpected.
In biblical language, they were a tumult!

But David heard something more.

A sound for God’s glory.

Why a New Sound is Resisted

“But as the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant entered the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down from her window. When she saw King David skipping about and laughing with joy, she was filled with contempt for him.”
(1 Chronicles 15:29, NLT)

It’s a reminder:
While God uses sons and daughters to worship like never before,
There will always be people looking on.
Critiquing and debating.

They don’t like the cymbals, the dance.
Or the new sound.
And especially, the celebration.

Critics disapprove of the means, method, or cost.

Perhaps, they want to stay in the traditional order of things.

Because, like Michal, they are looking through a window.
A frame, a perspective.
They are observers, not participants.

The Divine Affirmation

While those critics scowl, God looks at the raw, courageous, creative offering of the pioneer.
And His response is delight.

Like the bridegroom in the Song of Songs, He declares,

“You have captured my heart.” (SOS 4:9)

Beloved, you take My breath away.

One Generation

If David could imagine new expressions for the glory of God, what new expressions might God be inviting us into?

Something changed in one generation because one man, King David, had a heart after God and a Spirit-filled mandate.

He had the revelation,
“God deserves more”

We know the greatest instruments God creates
Are not made of bronze, wood, or strings.

They are people.
Not only vessels of praise.
But instruments of power.

A New Sound for a New Generation

“David, why do we need new instruments? The old ones are working fine.”

Why? Because He is deserving of more, and we can offer Him more.

New instruments and new people.
Fresh expressions of worship.

If David could bring a new sound into worship history,
Perhaps God is still releasing new sounds
Through those who are open to His Spirit.

The size of David’s innovation was directly related to the size of his vision of God.

What did David see about God that made “more” seem reasonable?

God’s glory.

The Great Crescendo

Then, I found Psalm 150.
The final Psalm is a call and exhortation to praise.
It lists instruments to praise God.
And it culminates with this:

“Praise him with a clash of cymbals…with loud clanging cymbals.
Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord!
Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 150:5-6, NLT)

Cymbals!
David’s new sound had become Israel’s song.

What one generation pioneered became the climax of Psalm 150, where the loud clash of cymbals is no longer controversial.
It has become part of God’s enduring call to praise.

The great crescendo.
And its loudness, its “clashiness”:
Far from being noise, it becomes a great sound giving glory to a great God.[3]

God received the glory,
And generations now offer Him more.

How to Boldly Release a New Sound of Worship

So, discover the voice God has entrusted to you.
Don’t spend your life trying to sound like someone else.
God has given you a unique expression of worship, creativity, and ministry.
Your gifts.

And secondly, don’t let criticism silence you.
David’s new expression of worship was celebrated by God but despised by Michal.
We know that innovations are not always understood.

Finally, there comes a time to release what God has entrusted to you.
Don’t hide your voice, your creativity, or your God-given expression to keep the window-watchers comfortable.

Maybe it’s time to stop worrying about the critics.

You are God’s new instrument.
So, step into the street.
And let the cymbals crash.

[3] Interestingly, the New Testament also uses cymbals as a warning (1 Corinthians 13:1). The problem is not the instrument, but how it is used. A cymbal can glorify God, or it can become empty noise. The difference is love.

  1. Hallelujah! I firmly believe that our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is saying now more than ever, He wants WORSHIPPERS, not just PRAISERS.

Anyone can praise, you know, offer lip service. But to truly WORSHIP, that is a HEART choice. In spirit and in truth.

No shame, worship with my whole being thru my dance and thru my voice, from my belly, loud like the high sounding CYMBALS.

Yes, there are those who criticize, roll their eyes, whisper and mutter that it don’t take all of that, comments like she is showing off.

But no, like Mary with the alabaster box, filled with perfumed oil that has gone thru CRUSHING, I must give HIM all of me, withholding nothing!

I may not have much by way of monies or material things.

But I have my Voice, and my hands and feet.

So, I dance like David and I shout. SHOUTS of thanks, praise, adoration, thru tears and LAUGHTER, as I recall God’s loving kindness, tender mercies, grace.

    O!

I will be 65 soon come November. So much that I have come thru, and overcome.

No rock will cry out in my place and no musical instruments will outdo what God has put inside of me!

Thanks so much for the reminder, the encouragement.

    My YET praise.

Daughter of the Most High, in His service and for His Glory,

    Tracy L. Moore

    1. oh yes, Tracy! You are a true joy <3
Thank you for this wonderful response
      And amen, witholding nothing
      Giving Him all
May many hear the Psalm 40:3 offering you bring from your whole heart and voice
and come to trust and rejoice as you do
      We say amen

      1. Helen Calder, your post are always on time for me!
God has called me to go forth and train up the next generation to learn how to dance in the fire for Him.
He kept saying to me “Your feet will make a new sound in the earth”.
I have been a dancer for over 50 years. In my later years, the Lord taught me how to prophetically dance for Him.
The Holy Spirit helped me write 8 new songs using scripture. I heard the Lord say to me ” Use the 8 new songs to create video lessons and dances”.
        Wow!!
        I am in awe!
For several years, other dancers and some pastors came against me for how God was using me in the dance.
        I was despised!
But I never stopped serving God.
Thank you for spending time seeking God for what to feed us. Your post have encouraged me.
        Blessings
        Pamela

  3. It’s interesting that I received the email titled “New Sound”! I was worshipping in my vehicle today as I drive from Ga to FL. It’s something I hadn’t done in a while …intimately with the Lord with no distractions, no phone, no music, just my voice of praise and worship unto the Lord!

I did something…I created a new song through the prompting of the Holy Spirit! It was a different type of worship to let the words flow and create a whole song. Too cool! God is awesome!

Thank you woman of God for the blogs!

      1. ah no I think that’s my site – it doesn’t know most of the emojis. It’s time the WordPress software modernised. :-)

  4. Thanks so much woman of God. All the glory to God. This is really encouraging. Recently, the Lord gave me Zechariah chapter 4, and verse 10 says: ‘ For who has despised the day of small things?……. I pray for grace and divine boldness to be faithful even with the little in Jesus name

    1. amen, Blessing

and may you see the multiplication of your “loaves and fish” to feed many

  5. Thank you Helen,
As a person who is a deacon yet continually called to ministry, being myself and not feeling pressured to conform to Pentecostal ministry culture, is a regular battle. Your message is encouraging.
Furthermore, one of my first callings was a a worshipper. As a creative as well, this message encourages me to keep open to the new thing.

    1. I pray you have a great sense of release and freedom in this next season Mike.
May this be a tipping point
Where you are assured of His grace and favor more than ever before
Opportunities arise to give of the unique gifts you carry
Open eyes to the new thing God is doing,
      in Jesus’ Name

(exciting to hear your early call as worshipper.
      We can relate to that)
