Hunger: How to Pursue God and See His Power

I believe the Holy Spirit is awakening a fresh hunger in His people—a deep longing to encounter God in His power and holiness!
If you can relate to this, it’s not a coincidence. It’s a divine appointment, drawing you into something new.

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.” (Psalm 37:4, NLT)

“Honor God’s Power”

"The hungry shall know God's Power" against background of a wave of the seaRecently, I came across the phrase “honor God’s power” in my prophetic worship transcript. It leaped off the page and straight into my heart, bringing conviction.
At that moment, I felt a deep hunger for God—like realizing I had almost missed an important appointment with Him.
I felt a sudden urgency to catch up with Him in what He was doing.

Why Does God Stir Hunger in Us?

Why does God sometimes let us feel like He is “passing by”?
And why must we respond and reach out to Him, when we see Him move?

  • After all, we know He is already willing and working (John 5:17-19)

I believe the Gospels give us some clues into this mystery!

“He Intended to Go Past Them”

In Luke 24, Jesus walked alongside two disciples on the road to Emmaus, but they did not recognize Him. He acted as though He intended to go further, but they urged Him to stay.
So, Jesus stopped in to eat with them. Only as He blessed and broke the bread did they realize who Jesus was.

Similarly, when Jesus walked on the water, we read an unusual detail in Mark’s account: “He intended to go past them” (Mark 6:48).

This is astonishing—what if the disciples hadn’t called out to Him?
But they did, and everything changed

Hunger is Expressed in Seeking

Think of how many people received miracles, healings, or deliverance—because they sought out Jesus.

  • Seeking God is an expression of faith and humility.

Bartimaeus heard Jesus was passing by and cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and restored his sight. (Mark 10:46-52)

A woman who needed healing pressed through the crowd and touched His garment. Power flowed into her body and she was instantly healed.

  • The fact that Jesus was on His way to another appointment didn’t stop her! (Luke 8:43-48)

Jesus commended them both for their faith.

A Vision that Stirred Hunger

The words, “honor His power” reminded me of a vision I had fifteen years ago: [1]

I saw Jesus walking by, dressed in a magnificent robe of many colors that flowed around Him.
As I saw this, a cry of intercession welled up inside me: “Lord, don’t pass us by! Don’t pass this generation by!”

It was a gut-wrenching, all-consuming prayer!

I was a prayer leader attending a healing training event.
Only later did I realize how pivotal that season was.

Hunger is an Invitation to an Encounter

There is an encounter only available as we tug on Heaven.

There are some gifts and provisions that our Father has for us that will only come as we seek Him.
The phrase that started me on this journey was, “It’s time to honor His power”.

Psalm 105:4 says,

“Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore!”

The Amplified Bible expands on this:

“Seek and deeply long for the Lord and His strength [His power, His might]; Seek and deeply long for His face and His presence continually.” (Psalm 105:4 AMP)

If you have felt stirred in your spirit by these verses, it may be a sign God is drawing you closer. He is calling you to ask, seek, and knock (Matt 7:7) because there is something on the other side of your pursuit:

A divine encounter with His presence and power.

5 Barriers to Hunger and How to Overcome Them

What holds us back from seeking Him with fresh hunger? Here are some barriers I’ve experienced in the past:

1. Thinking God will move whether we seek Him or not

We know God is sovereign, yet as we see in these Gospel stories, He often moves in response to faith and hunger.
That includes individuals and groups!
And hunger for God is the landing strip of the Holy Spirit.

2. Believing past disappointments mean God won’t move now

If you’ve felt weary in the waiting, the Holy Spirit is breathing life again. It’s a new day!

3. Settling for spiritual complacency

The danger of feeling “comfortable” is that we stop reaching for more of Him.
Or we may hold back due to fear.
But the Spirit of God is here, giving us grace to pray and go again.

4. Putting “rules” around how we seek God

For years, I heard the phrase often quoted, “Seek God’s face, not His hand (power).”
But God sets no such restrictions.
For example, in Acts 4, the early church prayed for God to stretch out His hand to heal and perform miracles.
In response, the place was shaken, and the Holy Spirit’s presence filled and empowered them.
Seeking God’s power is part of seeking Jesus, and we honor Him in the pursuit.

5. Having an unhealthy (counterfeit) hunger

Let’s be clear—there is an unhealthy hunger that is always seeking but never satisfied. And we need to guard against this.
We are not orphans in the Kingdom, but sons and daughters! [2]

We express our hunger at the due time, and our Father meets our needs. Our spiritual hunger meets His willingness to give—and leads to overflow.
(Luke 11:9-13)

A Call to Seek Him Today

“Seek Me and you will find Me!” (Jer 29:13)

It’s a prophetic seeking—because it’s timely—now is the time God is moving.

Today, the Holy Spirit is issuing an invitation. He calls His intercessors and prayer warriors, all His people to rise and pray.
May we answer God’s call.

Notes:

[1] When I describe a vision, it’s usually a vivid impression in my mind’s eye accompanied by a strong sense of God’s Presence. This is not an “open” (physical) vision. I believe all prophetic words, encounters, and visions should be compatible with Scripture and need to be weighed up—if you’d like to know more see 8 Ways to Grow In Prophetic Visions and Pictures.

[2] Here are some more thoughts on this (in addition to an orphan mindset):
An unhealthy/counterfeit hunger (one that always craves and is never satisfied in God) could come from

  • Being the sign of a wound of rejection that God is healing. By His mercy and grace, He reveals this to bring healing and set us free (John 8:32).
  • A religious spirit that gives the appearance of spirituality without the relationship or power (burdens of the Holy Spirit are not meant to be burdensome but lead us to encounter Jesus and His power)
  • Soulish hunger that is manufactured (rather than a genuine emotion that the Spirit is working in)
  • Any other source that is not the Spirit.

In my experience, even long-term intercessory prayer assignments can carry a longing that’s continually satisfied in His presence.

  1. Father in Yeshua’s name I ask that you fill all our hearts with love, knowledge, wisdom and understanding. Not just us believers but to all our enemies as well. Let us be resilient to withstand all evil and Bless the Prophets of this age to guide us in prayer, fasting and deliverance. May we all pray in unity seeking your face.
    Amen

  2. I love the part of this where you spoke about the phrase “Seek His face not His hand.” There are so many (incorrect) phrases and cliches we use that are just plain incorrect! We need to look to the Word itself–the woman with the issue of blood “if (and religious!)I can just touch the hem of His garment, I shall be made whole.” There are those among us that need all the encouragement we can get! If I have His hem, I have a hold of HIM! If I have His hand, I have HIM! “He longs to be gracious to us,” help us seek every part of You, Father!!! Help us to let go of the old ways, the old cliches, and seek You here and NOW!
