“The Lord will perfect that which concerns me” (Psalm 138:8a). If you have faced some unexpected twists and turns recently, let this promise encourage you.
- You will see God at work—you will see Heaven’s greater purpose—and you will declare, “My God does all things well!”
The Unexpected Appearance of the King
Two weeks ago, I came across this vision from nearly 30 years ago, and it felt fresh! Right now, I believe the wind of the Spirit is blowing across this insight for many.
I was standing on the veranda of an attractive, homestead-style home when I looked out and saw a distant figure making its way along a path that led toward the house.
As the person made his way closer, I saw that it was a man, hunched over and dressed in rags. I presumed he was a beggar.
As he approached the home, the man’s face was hidden, due to how he was bent over. Closer and closer he came until he was at the steps leading up to where I was standing. Then, he glanced up.
To my shock, I realized that I was looking into the face of Jesus.
Immediately the vision clicked off and the Holy Spirit spoke these words: “Would you recognize Me if I came?” [1,2]
3 Ways Jesus is at Work in Your Mystery
Jesus is the glorious King of Kings, but sometimes, He comes to us in ways that we do not expect.
And in events, we never saw coming.
- So, what is God doing when we don’t immediately recognize Him? Here are 3 ways God uses these times to grow us:
1. He is Revealing Our Doubt to Increase Our Faith
Unexpected Visitor
In Matthew 14, Jesus sends His disciples out in a boat—when partway across the lake, they encounter a storm.
Then, to their horror, they catch sight of a ghostly figure walking on the water.
And they are terrified!
No doubt the disciples assume Jesus is back on the land where they left Him—finishing up with the people and praying in the hills!
Never do they imagine He will show up nearby.
Least of all, appearing like a ghost and walking on water.
That is—until they hear His voice.
Jesus is Closer Than We Think
Like the disciples in the storm, there are times when we do not perceive Jesus.
When the light is dim and the horizon is tilting.
As we waver in the crisis, we are uncomfortable in our doubt.
Yet within our mystery is a miracle in motion.
And Jesus is closer than we think.
Our weakness is exposed so He can demonstrate His grace and increase our faith. Jesus says, “Oh you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matt 14:31b)
2. God is Teaching Us About Himself
An Unexpected Companion
Sometimes Jesus hides in plain sight! He is visible, but we do not recognize Him yet.
The disciples on the road to Emmaus encounter Him as a stranger.
They see someone who needs to be informed of current events—while Jesus sees two beloved sons of the Father.
For a duration, He keeps His identity hidden.
So, they ask questions—and find this mysterious traveler an eloquent teacher.
They learn about the Messiah, and then they see the Messiah.
“Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him, and He vanished from their sight.” (Luke 24:31, NKJV)
For a period, we do not recognize Jesus in our situation.
- But as we turn to His Word, we are reminded of who He is.
3. He is Revealing His Power
Through Locked Doors
We did not expect Jesus to come this way, to take so long, or to be so quick.
Perhaps, we were expecting God to make a grand entrance. We were looking for God to enter the front door, but He entered through the side or back door.
Or through no door at all.
In John 20, the disciples are hiding, with the doors locked, when Jesus suddenly shows up in the gathering.
- Where did He come from?
Shut doors have no power against God, and there is no place His grace cannot reach us.
Soon, the moment of revelation arrives—unexpectedly, Jesus is here!
In Unexpected Ways
God is working outside the frame of our expectations, where miracles are birthed.
We look in one direction, only to find He is moving in another.
Someone needs to know He is at work in the alternatives, is present in your problems, and has more options than you are aware of.
And He will reveal His power.
Jesus is walking on the waters—right here in our turmoil, where emotions run high, and thoughts run wild, He has command of the situation.
And He is about to show His face.
Notes:
[1] I first published this vision in my book, “Prophetic People in a Changing Church” (2007). In the original context, the homestead represented the church, and the balcony, intercessory prayer (this still has relevance, today). It heralded a time of personal trial in my church life, in which I learned about the difference between Old and New Testament prophetic ministry. Recently, I’ve used it in teaching sessions on the subject.
[2] When I describe a vision, it’s usually a vivid impression in my mind’s eye accompanied by a strong sense of God’s Presence. This is not an “open” (physical) vision. I believe all prophetic words, encounters, and visions should be compatible with Scripture and need to be weighed up—if you’d like to know more see 8 Ways to Grow In Prophetic Visions and Pictures.

Helen. Thanks for this one! I was starting to plant a church. My expectations were there. I had a green light based on prayer and many counselors to move forward based on an old assignment and my gifts. The first three months I wasn’t feeling it. Instead, God opened doors for me in Hollywood as an actor and landed two nice commercials. One I did with Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark). Haven’t been in Hollywood for 20 years. Suddenly… it’s here and I’m back in. I was looking in one direction only to see him moving in another very fast and abundantly clear. Thanks for a timely word.
Yes indeed, that is SO like Him. What a great testimony of open doors, Rob!
Helen,
Thank you so much for this post. I usually read your posts on Facebook but this one came to my email and the timing is perfect.
My only child, my son of 26 years, told us in April that he is now a transgender woman. We had no clue whatsoever this was coming our way and hit us like a bomb.
Our hearts are broken and we are devastated – but God!
My husband who hasn’t been in church for 20 years is now back in church. He was never interested in reading the Bible and praying and now he is spending time in the Word and prayer. I’m praying this is permanent and not just a “knee jerk” reaction.
We are so shocked we are in this situation, but I want to see the hidden Jesus in this devastation. And yes, it is truly revealing our weaknesses and His great love and power. He has already showed himself in my husband which is a miracle.
I want to see Him more and more and not turn my son and his friends away but welcome them with mercy and grace. Just yesterday I used the exact same words you used (to my prayer group) – “emotions run high” so pray for us.
Now my heart is leaning towards starting a support group. Is this where Jesus will show up next?
I believe this is a season that my son is in and won’t stay in forever but it’s one of the toughest things I’ve ever dealt with. God is good! Prayers appreciated!
Brenda, my heart and prayers go out to you, it’s such a big change, one you never saw coming. I love your response and your heart. May this be the dawning of a season of miracles for your family.
Thank you, this is an encouraging word for us here in the Hawaiian Islands as we are mourning the great loss of lives and homes in the Maui wildfires.
Oh, Laura, we are so sorry to see what’s happened, our hearts go out to you all. We are praying for the recovery, for unity, for the answers to come, for unusual provisions, for families to come together, and for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ Name
Hi Isabel, I’m praying for a move of God to come to your family. For life, and health and strength, to you and your son. Freedom and miracles, in Jesus’ Name
Amen to your encouraging word Helen!
I know God has held me but I have couldn’t have thought that my road would become even more challenging having been accused of untruths from sisters and family which caused my father before his death to not talk to me and even kick me out whilst visiting him at our family home, off course due to his estate and money I believe, I have a clear conscience having not done the things, having a son who was on meth, now clean for many years but with mental illness now and only a tiny bit of what he was, I had a break down when I found out, I had SO MUCH to deal with prior from my ex, one daughter has been so hurt from everything she rarely visits me and my other & her husband who are close with our Lord and 3 grandchildren have had to move away to find work, so I am now very alone, my friend last year committed suicide whilst I went on my one & only holiday & I my dog passed last year after 17yrs so I am in total grief! I do have a new dog and recently purchased an apartment trying to move from acreage but apartment has master brm flooding major problems and Body Corp will not do a thing even though I had building check prior to settlement so I do wonder what God sometimes is doing BUT in the midst I still believe, it’s very hard and I’m really struggling!
Helen I would really appreciate it if you could please pray for this houndog please as I love our Lord and I want to be walking and worshipping and full of His joy once more and fulfilling whatever God has for me instead of being so sad!
I know it’s not over yet!
Thanks for encouraging me today!
I needed this so much and little dog needs me too!
I hear that tenacious faith, Nicci! It is a gift from God. I pray you have a visit of God’s joy in the midst of everything and that you building issues will be settled, and for peace in the family, in Jesus Name
Hi, Dear Woman of God. I was on a family fast program ( started on Monday,Aug 14 ) in our home with my Wife and my Son. I experienced the follwing. In the middle of the program, i was sitting on a bench, eyes closed while declarations was made by my son, leading the prayer, some one arrived and sat next to me. To my amazement the feeling was different and it happened in seconds. The atmosphere was heavy and felt numb during those seconds and didn’t tell to my family. Later after midnight found your email that led me to write this comment.
Dear, Helen.
May this mean something Would you PLEASE pray for me?
