“Come and Drink” ~ How the Holy Spirit Can Be Your Source

ocean wave with quote, "freely you have received, freely give"God is coming to the dry, the thirsty, and those who need replenishing with a fresh outpouring of His Holy Spirit.

  • And if you pour out to others, the Lord has a refreshing drink for you—and not only a little but an abundant outpouring!

His promise is,
“The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” (Prov 11:25 NLT) [1]

And the Lord wants you to know, that He is your continual source of life. He alone is your Fountain, the One who quenches your thirst.

A New Sound from Heaven

Recently, I had a podcast chat with Kate Smith of Catch the Fire Ministries. And as I listened back to it, one sentence struck me: [2]

  • “Learning what it means to drink of the Holy Spirit…was like coming home”

I was reminiscing about a time in 1994 when I felt God was calling me to write down a message from Him!
Little did I know that I was about to hear a new sound from Heaven—and that it would change my life.
Because leading up to that moment, I had been very low. [3]

I kept the Appointment

The psalmist described my condition well when he said:
“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God…My tears have been my food day and night…” (Psalm 42:1, NKJV)

Finally, the day came when I kept that appointment with God.
I sat in the upstairs room of our temporary accommodation, with a small notebook.

And I heard Him say:
“There is more, much more than you have ever known. You have yet to drink of My presence.”

The Holy Spirit was Moving

A few days later, my husband Malcolm was chatting with a friend of ours who was a pastor.
And he shared that the Holy Spirit was moving in a new way, in his church! We heard that many people were healed, filled, and finding new joy in their relationship with Jesus.

That day, I didn’t write anything down in my notebook. I just got down on the floor and cried out, “God, I must have more of You!”

So, the following weekend, we visited our friend’s church and I went forward at the altar call, to receive prayer.
While there, I felt God’s presence in a tangible and fresh way—and I left filled with joy, “inexpressible and full of glory”! (1 Pet 1:8)

9 Reasons to Receive the Holy Spirit’s (Continual) Infilling

The Holy Spirit is symbolized by water throughout the Bible—especially outpoured water—whether in the form of a river, spring, fountain, or rain.

And the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity—God present with us, in His anointing and power!
Just as water is essential to life, the imagery of “outpoured water” speaks of God’s presence as our life source.

1. God has a Gift for You and Your Family

And “thirst” speaks of our felt need for God.
Isaiah wrote, “For I will pour out water to quench your thirst and to irrigate your parched fields. And I will pour out my Spirit on your descendants, and my blessing on your children.” (Isaiah 44:3, NLT)

So, if it feels like you, or your family members, are in a “parched field” right now, reach out to God. For this is a promise of a generational outpouring.

2. You are a Partaker of Eternal Life

Jesus encountered a woman at a well, and said, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:10, NKJV)

Throughout the Bible, water speaks of salvation and eternal life (see Rev 22:17)
But we do not need to wait until eternity to receive the benefits of this life-giving flow.
For it is available to us right now.

3. God will Baptize You in the Holy Spirit

Jesus declared, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink!
For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him.” (John 7:37-39a, NLT)

The outpouring He spoke of took place on the Day of Pentecost—and ever since it has been available to each of God’s children (Acts 2). Now, you are the “anyone” Jesus speaks about!

4. You Can Live out of an Overflow

Jesus described the move of the Holy Spirit through us, like a river—and the nature of a river is to flow, continuously.
He sent His disciples out saying, “Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matt 10:8)

Then later, when Paul wrote, “…be filled with the Spirit”, he used the Greek verb translated “be filled” in the continuous present tense (Eph 5:18).
This gives us a glimpse of what is available to us in our own life with God.
For as we freely receive, we can give out of His overflow.

5. You will be Fruitful as You “Abide in Him”

But experiencing the Holy Spirit’s flow is not a passive posture—one that we take for granted.
For Jesus is our continual source of life.

In John 15, Jesus likened Himself to a vine and His followers to the branches.
A branch grows and bears fruit because it receives life from the vine, in the form of sap.

As Jesus emphasizes, our part, like the branches, is to “abide”—to stay. Then, we are actively engaged in our connection to Him, and bearing fruit comes naturally.

6. You will Encounter Joy in His Presence

Real joy comes from our life with God, for “in His presence is fullness of joy” (Psalm 16:11).

The psalmist speaks of God’s people being:
“…abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.” (Ps 36:8-9 NKJV)

7. Jesus’ Righteousness will Satisfy You

Jesus spoke of being satisfied with His righteousness.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.” (Matt 5:6, NKJV)

Of course, the transaction in which we received Jesus’ righteousness is located in the past, at the cross!
But still, we can continually return to this truth, partake by faith, receive, drink, and be filled. [4]
And sin cannot intrude while we are rejoicing in a feast of righteousness!

8. God Has Appointed a Harvest for You

One promise God made to the Israelites about their future territory, was that it would be watered by rain from Heaven.
“…but the land which you cross over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water from the rain of heaven” (Deut 11:11, NKJV)

Today, this can be your expectation—that the Holy Spirit will water any location or position you occupy.
Then, it will yield an overflowing harvest!

9. You will Work from His Strength

But what if we continue to give out for God, without ever having a posture to receive from Him?
On that day in 1994, I stood at my chair, realizing there was one thing I needed to pray—and it was, “Lord, I repent of doing Your work in my own strength.”

Right there was the source of my brokenness and disillusionment.
And the doorway to joy.

Perhaps, you can also relate to this. If so, hear the loving and joyful invitation of Jesus once more, “Come to Me and drink!”

“I Give Drink to My People”

We live in such a time right now—when the Holy Spirit is coming to the dry, the thirsty, and those who need replenishing, with a new sound from Heaven.

God declares, “I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen.” (Isa 43:20b, NKJV)

And this also is my prayer for you:
That you may discover what it means to be filled with Him—NOW—and yet live in the joyful quest for more.

  3. Lynneve Jane Clayton

    Morning Helen,
Lynneve here. Thank you for this blog. It was wonderful to read as usual, but for me it was the symbolism of your points that struck me, rather than the points themselves. Let me explain.

As I read your blog, God kept reminding me of my name and that, dare I say it, my name is inexplicably linked to my purpose. Something I am becoming more profoundly aware of.

Growing up, I didn’t really like my name because it was different, it made me stand out. People either got it wrong or could never remember it. It was a catch 22 situation.

Then in 2016, I met a guy, Simon who completely changed how I saw my name and its meaning.

Despite having a veritable smorgasbord of nick names to choose from (Boof Head, Noof, Nevie, LJ, Mother Duck, Ms C, Capuchin, Warrior Mouse), Simon (who you might recall was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer 5 months after we started dating and passed away just 15 weeks after we were married), would always call me by both my first and second name… ‘My Lynneve Jane’. One day I decided to ask why. His reply took me by surprise.

You see, Lynneve Jane means Cascade of Life, Gift of God.

For Simon, I lived my name. I personified it as I cared for him in a way most wives would never get the chance to. Hearing that helped me waken up to the fact that names are a pivotal point in our journey… Just look at Abraham, Sarah, Israel, Solomon, Paul, James and John.

As I was reading your blog about water and the spirit, I became keenly aware that God was putting his finger on my name, drawing attention to both the purpose and the gift my name endows.

A cascade of life is indeed a gift of God. It’s abundant. It’s majestic. It’s refreshing. It’s powerful. It’s thunderous. People are drawn to it.

Yet there have been times when I have felt more like the woman at the well. Visiting the well at a time when I am least likely to receive judgement or condemnation from others, using a measure much smaller than my potential because I have allowed my circumstances to dictate my freedom, unaware that the source has made a special trip to meet me there and longs to open the floodgates and release me from all that has held the water bound, restricted, contained.

Then, other times, I have appreciated the beauty of the cascade and the outpouring, which creates ripples and waves and pools of delight… yet have also inadvertently slowed the outpouring with the rocks that I’ve carried along the way. Rocks that weigh down, block the flow, cause diversions, distract and prevent me and others from diving in freely or with carefree abandon. Fullness of life is stymied.

As someone who is constantly giving out to others, like you I have to be intentional about being filled from the source. And just as intentional about not doing it my own strength. Because when I try to do it in my own strength and don’t take the time to be filled, then the purpose and the power of all I am called to do and carry is reduced or worse, made redundant.

Oh God, let my heartcry ever be: Pour it out, Lord, pour it out. More of you!

Thank you Helen, for your words, your inspiration, your revelation and your vulnerability.

    Blessings
    Lynneve Jane

    1. that is so, so beautiful, Lynneve Jane :-)
I’m sure every person in this space can both relate to, and be ministered by, your testimony.
      Cascade of life!
Yes and amen, that is who you are!
And you are loved by God!
thank you so much for sharing and I pray the imagery of the Holy Spirit as cascading water, and the mirror that represents, will continue to minister to you

  4. Thank you faithful servant of God for delivering this timely message to me.I am in a season of seeking replenishment so I can also be able to run the race the Lord has marked out for me.Number 9 is my need now,to work in His strength. I feel like I have nothing to give anymore and I pray the Holy Spirit will fill me anew.

  5. Dear Sister Helen, I can relate to all the words you typed out in these pages. In these days, I was yearning for a latter rain to replenish the dry places of my small life. In fact, before reading this, I was praying with tears in my eyes for a spiritual replenishment. I often felt that many years have been passed with no evident harvest in tiny avenues of my Calling. However, I felt that the Lord has assured me that He can use me effectively and fruitfully irrespective of my getting older in terms of my physical years. Currently, I am standing in a cross road anticipating the Holy Spirit’s empowerment and equipping for a greater level of yielding for God’s Kingdom. Thank you Sister Helen once again for your efforts for channeling God’s voice. God bless you abundantly.
