Discernment: 9 Ways to Banish Fear of Evil

Do you have a spiritual gift of discernment? Perhaps you are not sure, but you do know that you have a heightened spiritual awareness.

Every day, hundreds of people are finding Enliven Blog because of my articles on the gift of discernment.

Many Christians are troubled by fear of evil, or do not know what to do about what they are experiencing, and want it to stop.

I understand how this can occur. As a young child I was frequently afraid. Then as a teenager, I had demonic encounters that left a long shadow of fear over my life—one that lasted decades. I now see how unnecessary this was.

9 Ways to Banish Fear of Evil

Here is a checklist of 9 keys that have helped me break free of fear of evil, and I believe will help you live free of fear and anxiety in every part of your life.

1. Know God is With You

Banish Fear of Evil‘Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.’ (Ps 23: 4a)

God’s answer to His people who experienced fear was to remind them of His Presence with them.

Knowing God is with you is not about a feeling. You can believe God is with you, because He says so in the Bible and God’s Word is completely trustworthy. When you begin to experience fear, choose faith: thank and praise God that He is with you.

2. Refocus on God

‘The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?’ (Ps 27:1)

Feeling afraid of evil is an indication that your focus is not where it should be. When you are afraid, the Holy Spirit is inviting you to put your focus back on your Father God. In Him, you are completely secure.

See God as your stronghold and your shield and His Presence around you as impenetrable.

3. Use Jesus’ Name

The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. (Prov 18:10)

Recognise that Jesus is with you to protect you (Matt 28:20) and His Name is powerful. The Name of Jesus is your badge of authority and with it you can address—and banish—both fear and the evil you are being confronted with. (Luke 10:17)

Know that Satan is already defeated at the cross of Jesus Christ. ‘And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.’ (Col 2:15)

4. Be Filled with the Holy Spirit

‘For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.’ (2 Tim 1:7)

The Holy Spirit will never lead us towards fear (see also Romans 8:15), instead, He will remind us of who we are—children of God, with a loving and powerful Father.

Praying in the Spirit will help empower you at times of spiritual warfare. After Paul talks about spiritual warfare and the armour of God in Ephesians 6, he adds: And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.’ (Eph 6:18)

5. Feed your Faith

‘…for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.’ (1 John 5:4)

Are you being tempted to feel anxious or afraid? Be aware of input that you are allowing into your mind. Set up a secure gateway by not viewing TV programs, videos and other media or choices that could promote fear.

Instead, be intentional about feeding your faith. Read and confess Scriptures. Listen to faith-building teaching that reminds you of who you are, Who your God is, and the authority you have in Jesus. You will be amazed at how much difference it makes! Then, speak and pray accordingly.

6. Use Your Authority and Check you are Under Authority

‘Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.’ (Heb 13:17)

The Name of Jesus is powerful, and your badge of authority. Remember that there is also power and protection through being submitted to authority. Engage in a church community, where there are pastors and leaders who can support and pray with you.

7. Set the Atmosphere

‘For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.’ (Rom 14:17)

Even when you have entered a place where someone else has allowed evil to dwell, you still have the ability to set the atmosphere around your own life and carry it with you.

You don’t need to be like a thermometer, going up and down according to the temperature around you. As a child of God, you can be like a thermostat: you can set the temperature, the atmosphere and the environment. Don’t settle for less.

8. Adjust Your Perspective

‘You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.’ (1 John 4:4)

Fear is an indication that we have lost perspective, or wrongly believe that the demonic realm has more power than God does in our lives.

Here is the right perspective. God is greater! There is simply no comparison and no competition, God is all-powerful and the demonic realm only has the power that people allow it to have.

9. Be Aware of God’s Heart for People

‘When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.’ (Matt 9:36)

Jesus felt compassion for the lost and broken. God loves that person who is bound by evil, or oppressed, or demonised. He has mercy towards those being used by the enemy to threaten you and others. The Father looks into their hearts and He sees the source of their own pain and the place that the enemy gained entry. God sees the bondage and atmosphere of evil as a cage from which He desires to set them free.

We need to see people with the eyes of the Father who loves them—and when we love, fear will lose its hold on us.

Hi Jose, what an interesting story. It is a great example of using authority and faith to speak directly to the spiritual realm and bring peace to a situation and people affected by fear.
Imagine the advance of the Kingdom of God if all Christians understood and exercised the authority they carried! May we see it in our day.

Thank you so much for this series on discernment, especially this installment. I’ve been filled with fear of the demonic from experience I had as a child, despite knowing that God is bigger. This article has helped me to realize that I haven’t been making myself refocus on God when I become fearful, and now I’m going to put these things into practice.

I have also finally accepted that I’ve been blessed – and not cursed – with the Gift of Discernment. I’ve been told many times by many people that I have this gift, and I’ve always wondered at the back of my mind or that’s truly what it is. Now I know. Because of the fear I experience, I have never wanted to allow myself to use this gift. I am now fully determined to overcome that fear and to allow God to train me up for His purposes (which is a huge deal coming from stubborn me).

Please pray for me. I have a friend whose oldest son is being oppressed for the second time. He’s very young (I want to say 8 or 9 years old), and I’ve advised her to seek counsel with her pastor and have let her know that I’m willing to be there with her to offer support when she’s prepared to reclaim her home and her family. I want to be prepared for this encounter. Please pray for her (Shannon) and her family, and also for all who will be there to help her and her husband cast out this presence. Do you have any advice for me as a discerner? I am new to this, and I don’t want to overstep what God has planned for me.

Thank you, and God bless you and your ministry.

  2. Deborah

I appreciate your message on fear. Fear will grip you, stop you from progressing and if not dealt with will keep you in bondage.

For years I was bound by a spirit of fear, after realizing Jesus came to set me free I began to quote 2 Timothy 1:7 which says, God did not give us the spirit of fear, but power love and a sound mind. The more I spoke this scripture the stronger I became. Thank God I am free.

Thank you for sharing such a timely word.

Hi Deborah, I love that verse too. What a great testimony you have, may you continue to walk with boldness and confidence, mantled in the empowering grace of God!

  3. Steven

    1. Helen Calder Post author

Hi Steven, what happened at the time you suddenly became talkative? Can you give me some more information?

  4. Andrea

    Hi Helen,

Since I was a young adult, I have dreams with demonic presence every now and then. I never see the demons but I feel their oppression in the dream and sometimes even after I wake up I still feel the oppression. I grew up in a Christian home, I am spirit filled and know to call on Jesus. All the battles in my dreams have been won. However as my relationship with Christ is growing, I feel the oppression after I wake up from the dreams more than before and the battles are longer where I’m up for hours praying & rebuking. I recognize when the battle is over because the atmosphere in the room changes, it becomes lighter / less heavy and peace comes back. I’ve spoken to my fellow brothers & sisters in Christ and not many have had these experiences. I’m not sure if I have left a door open for the enemy to attack or is it part of a spiritual gift? Have you had similar experience?

    1. Helen Calder Post author

      Hi Andrea,
Yes I have had that experience and am grateful that I don’t have it these days! I believe our inheritance is to be free of oppression and bad dreams, if you are experiencing it as you are growing in maturity and closer to God, it may be that there is a contention taking place for your growth and advancement. Prayer ministry was a huge help to me. It’s interesting that you should leave this question, because I’ve started work on a blog post about bad dreams and nightmares which I intend to release this week, so keep an eye out for that, for more information to help with breakthrough.

  5. Wesley

I really enjoy your post, on your experiences and study’s on this specific gift, I’m 18 and atuff like this really catch my eye. Sometimes for weeks I dream and wake up in a clenched position from demonic dreams they’re not so much me being scared but me just sensing and feeling there presence when I wake up from the dreams! Now my whole family is Christian and pray over our house and such, but I feel I sense other people’s pain and fear! I notice I always Atruggle sto sleep whenever someone in my family is having a hard time or being spiritually attacked. Seeing these post you made helps me a lot to understand what I’m going through and sense. Another thing I can see/feel is someone’s spirit, often I know if there sad or anything! Thanks for creating an amazing blog! Thought I’d shared my atories hopefully I learn to utilize my gift Better as I get older

    1. Helen Calder Post author

Hi Wesley, it’s good to hear from you, thank you for leaving the note. I hope you have been encouraged by this article. It sounds as though you are on the right track, keep on loving Jesus and focusing on Him. Be richly blessed 🙂

when I was 9years old at a big church some where in d city I grew up in,d reverend came up to d kids section n handpicked a few of us,d rev asked d whole church to pray for d 5 kids before them for we were chosen by God for pastorship or so. later on in life years past, two other leaders of ministries very independent from each other told me d same thing I had as an encounter as a kid,by now I have to say growing up was never like other kids cos,I could sense presence, evil, event b4 they happened,at a time I became like a walking theater, always experiencing wat I think I may av tot of moments before d said event takes place, moreso,d personalities involved most times always seem identical, once I think about it,it will surely happen b4 I get there, after I left there, or some1 might just summarize to me what happened, while I was much younger I use to sense evil especially if am sent to fetch something in a dark place, ppl use to laf at me but surely I was never always blabbing or wrong….I grew up in a broken home,so sometimes my mum would weep or look sober n as a child I would console her with words I never knew I said n truly, something will happen to change her worries to joy…I never knew I was her favorite cos I was never good at lying, stealing fries,or naughty tins kids do for fun, each time I try such I will always surely be d game changer cos I will b caught n then others follow suit, I remember her telling me SAVIOUR,u can’t do dis n dat not cos u r not incapable of but bcos u r very different from other kids,I never used to understand but now I SEE

  8. Marinda

It is true fear has been at my side all the time. Especially now because the spirits know since i am finally i believe going to be free they are trying to scare me but they will not because God is always with me. 🙂
Its great know i can serve God with my gift of discernment though it will not be an easy road though i am happy i can just help others.
Also i was going to ask if you have any knowledge of how a generational curse can bound my gifts of site. I see things though not as much as i should but i see other things too but its confusing. Also i was going ask if you knew anything about generational curses because i have one of well i can not say what it is for i am ashamed and i was just a little girl and i still am and it hurts i have dealt with this but its for a reason and i thank God for always holding on to me when i needed it. He has always been through and if it was not for God i do not know where i would be right now.

      1. Marinda

Yes i truly do need prayer. I had a deliverance for the demon of fear but it did not help and i did not feel any different. Though now i need one for my generational curse sadly i must break it because it truly has caused a lot of things in my life these demons have from hurting others around me to attacking me in my sleep as a little girl and now. I will read your post again thank you:)

  9. Lynette

    Hello, Helen-
I am so grateful to have found your blog. I have been blessed with the gift of discernment, and am searching for what to do with it. As a child, I kept most things to myself, fearing estrangement from others. I felt like I WAS different, too, but didn’t know why. As I grew older, I began to research the ability to “feel” and see spirits, having prophetic dreams, and the ability to read people so well. I began to see these abilities as the gifts they really are. I have been praying for guidance on what to do with any encounters I might have. I found your blog and McCracken Ministries once before, and was grateful then. At that time, I didn’t subscribe, then changed computers and “lost” the website.
The other night, searching for your blog and the ministries, I came across several other websites that warned Christians against ANY interaction with the paranormal. Anything roaming the earth was demonic, according to them. It actually scared me! I thought to myself, “Is what I see and feel demonic!?” For the first time in my life, I was actually scared of what I might see or feel. But the thought “came” to me that almost nothing I had ever encountered “felt” evil in any way. I believe God was telling me not to be afraid of the gift I’ve been given. Today, I found your blog again!! Not only that, but found the “signs you may have the gift of discernment” and “9 ways to banish fear of evil”! Both of these have been very helpful to me. I believe now more than ever that I have been given these gifts from God, and I appreciate the Word on banishing fear of evil. It reinforced what I felt from God the other night.
Thank you. I have subscribed, and hope to read many more blogs and ministries!

  10. Carmen

This article hit the nail on the head for me. You are absolutely right! I can’t thank you enough for sending this to me! The reason I reached out to you and asked for prayer was because I recently encountered something I have never seen/felt/or sensed before. I have never seen an unearthly being. I had no idea what to do, or who to ask for help, or who I could even talk to about it. I felt it’s evil and saw it standing in my living room looking right at me. I became ruled by fear. I was scared to be alone, to be in the dark ,or even go to sleep. What I saw and felt (extreme fear, anxiety, alone, empty, depressed, hopelessness) consumed me. Until tonight, when I decided I would check my e-mail and saw the response you gave to my prayer request. I clicked on the blue link knew within the first minute of reading my priorities were off!! Lately, the routine of every day life has had all of my attention. (making sure the house is clean, cooking dinner, laundry, being a mom, wife, play dates, planning cookouts, family reunions, summer vacation, making sure we have plenty of bug spray and sunscreen, cleaning up spilled milk and doctoring boo boo’s ). By focusing all my time and emotion on those things I had put Jesus on the back burner. He wasn’t first in my life. Thus causing me to go through what I went through…Reading this has helped me to remember the importance of always staying prayed up, studied up, and keeping my attention on Jesus.
Thank you for all you do! I ask that if you could please continue to pray for me, as I will for you and this ministry.

    Your sister in Christ,

Hi Carmen, I’m glad to hear that! Yes I pray that you will continue to grow in your faith and strength. God has great things for you!

  13. Emmanuel Asafo-Adjei

    Dear Helen,
I thank our Lord Jesus Christ for coming across this awesome spiritual resources.
I have a friend who has this amazing spirit of discernment, He picks all forms of spiritual signals ,he can’t stand those with evil spirits so whenever we in the midst of people he always choose where to stand even in church. He has explained to me in several words and examples as how it does to him. He even said with those with evil spirits they drain him of power store by prayer and fasting.
I didn’t understand him until I read your article, please help me to help him

    1. Helen Calder Post author

      Hello Emmanuel,
One of the things that we can struggle with as discerners, especially while we are still growing in the gift and in our faith and relationship with God, is the temptation to allow the evil we see or sense to dictate our response. Our focus should be on Holy Spirit, and where HE wants us to be, and responding to our Heavenly Father.
So regarding your friend, my thoughts are, encourage Him to tune more into discerning Holy Spirit and His anointing, and focus on obedience to Father rather than avoiding the evil.

  14. Tea

I believe God led me to your site. I can remember having sensed evil presences around me since I was about 4 years old. I have reason to suspect my father participated in Satanic worship and may have included me (bit-by-bit memories are coming back to me). My mother’s father was a firm believer that the Blood of Jesus protected us from evil. Though I spent a limited time with my grandfather, I feel blessed that he ingrained these beliefs in me. Please pray for my family and me as it appears my father’s ungodly worship has placed a demonic fear stronghold over my daughters and me. We have been prayed over through more than one deliverance ministry causing us to be spirit-filled (baptized in the Holy Spirit). Yet my 8 year-old daughter and I still experience sleepness nights (I read to her a nightly devotional and we pray together before bedtime). Thank you for your blog and thank you in advance for your prayers.

Thank you for these lessons. I have learned a lot and they have helped speed up my learning curve. As with most people, that replied to your blog, my journey was not nice. Not to long ago God put the picture of him talking to satan, about Job, into my head and when he said “you can do anything but take his life” it struck me that he said the same thing to satan concerning me. This altered my way of thinking immensely. I have had several life threatening attacks on my life and this picture showed me were they came from and that God was protecting me.
At a young age I started to use drugs and alcohol to hide from the pain, of these attacks and to block out things I was feeling. Thirteen years ago I joined AA and started my way back to God. About a year ago I finally made the decision to fully commit my life to God. Eight months ago I started going to Celebrate Recovery and there is where I met the most baffling person I had ever seen.
I did not know what to think about this young lady and was really confused. One day I asked her what CR had helped her the most with and her reply was mildly shocking. She said Hatred, which confused me even more because I could not see it in her. Her and I have a running joke about her being my test subject, because I kept prodding her with questions to find out what I was in her. As I learned more and more about her past, much of it to horrible to write down, I became more and more confused because I could not see any of this trauma in her. At times she has accused me of thinking that she is perfect lol.
It was just yesterday that I think I figured out what I was seeing. Jesus Christ has returned her Innocence. Not perfection, not purity, not naivety, but simple child like Innocence. Then today I read this blog in which you say to look for the good God is doing. So if I am not to far off on my assessment, I can say that God is letting me see what He is seeing? That would be a blessing almost to big to comprehend.
Once again, thank you for your blogs and if you have any impute or need clarification, on something I have written, please reply. 🙂

I have been though alot and I really am not understanding truly what I am an was going though my story is too long to go into but in short I’m able to see shawdows and I have had encounter with things I believe we’re spirits , in certain environments I sometimes feel the atmosphere is not good . My biggest concern now are the shadows not sure what brings them is it something that I am doing. I even as a child could feel things and had an encounter then which really scared me but never talked about it much until now, I had asked my sisters had they experienced anything like this when we were growing up or even as adults and they said know. Just a little unsure but your articles did help just wondering if this is a gift. Thanks

    1. Haily

So I’m a former drug addict healed by power of Jesus. I went to teen challenge for a long term rehab program and 3 months into my program I had the silence Jesus needed to fully awaken me . I was slab in the spirit. The next day I prayed out of no desire of my own for the gift of discernment that I came across 9 times in three scriptures I kept going over in my bible. I prayed for that gift. For about the next week the presence of Jesus swaddled me like a blanket it’s difficult to explain. But shortly my trial began at the time I didn’t realize I was internalizing my new gift and bringing on all those feelings and senses searching for it to have been the issue in my life.. long story short because of my unstable rocky no root nothing to really hang on to foundation I was terrified for the rest of my program over some serious issues that went my story but because I was getting sober and starting comely over and seeing reality EVErYthing made no sense. Its taken 5 years for me to finally be comfortable in my girft and faith is UNSHAKEN. It was Bsoluy horrific what I went through so confusing I was to scared to talk to anybody about it in the program and the one person. I did talk to about it I question her sanity along with mine….. But now .. now I know without a doubt this girft prevents things if used right . It also lets u see the army of brothers and sisters u will be standing with in the end . Nothing I love more other than my alone time …than to connect with another spirit that God led me to. One thing I’m learning is to let things about more sometimes.before u tell ur Intel on the evil . Cuz people won’t be live u unless they see it then self as well. Its very hard for me tho
