Have you ever had a sense that you have outgrown your present situation, in relation to your gifts, ministry, and calling? That it is time to lift the ceiling and move out the walls so that you can grow your gift to the next level?
This is a situation that a group of prophets under Elisha’s leadership found themselves in:
‘The company of the prophets said to Elisha, “Look, the place where we meet with you is too small for us. Let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a pole; and let us build a place there for us to meet.” And he said, “Go.”’ (2 Kings 6:1-2)
Perhaps you can identify with this today. From deep within, you cry out, ‘I need more room!’
It is time for a shift in perspective. In order to grow, you must first take your thinking to a new location.
4 Keys to Enlarge Your Gifts and Ministry
1. Be Willing to be Taken out of Your Comfort Zone
The prophets submitted their plan and proposal to Elisha, who was their spiritual leader. Gaining his approval, they gathered their resources and sought out their building materials.
The task of building—construction—was not necessarily a task the prophets were familiar with. We know that they had to borrow an axhead—and that one of the prophets used it clumsily, dropping it into the river (2 Kings 6:5-6).
When it comes to developing your gifts and ministry and growing to the next level, embrace the empowerment that oversight can bring.
Be prepared to work hard and enter a phase of building and development. Don’t be surprised when you are taken out of your comfort zone during times of enlargement.
2. Go to the Source—the Holy Spirit
‘Look, the place where we meet with you is too small for us. Let us go to the Jordan…’ (2 Kings 6:1)
The Jordan’s locality yielded a ready supply of building materials. However, the river was not just a practical choice. The prophets were moving to a place of spiritual and historical significance.
‘He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit…’ (John 7:38-39a)
In Scripture, the Holy Spirit is represented as a river.
If you desire to grow to the next level in your gifts, you need to foster a continual awareness of the Holy Spirit being the source of your gift.
This also means becoming more deeply established in the truth of God’s Word. (Psalm 1:2-3)
Press in to God for spiritual renewal. Your Father has an overflow for you to minister out of.
3. Step into New Things
‘Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before.’ (Joshua 3:4a)
The Jordan is where the Israelites crossed over into the Promised Land of Canaan (Joshua 3). It is where, generations later, John preached and baptized crowds of people into repentance.
The Jordan speaks of new life and of entering into the promises of God.
Are you in a place of transition into the new things God has for you? Be encouraged.
Today, Jesus is inviting you to share His resurrection life. All things are being made new. Your destiny awaits!
4. Determine to Live in the Place of Miracles
It was not only a place where past generations had encountered God. It was also a place where miracles occurred in the prophets’ own generation:
- Elijah and Elisha struck the Jordan with the prophet’s mantle and the waters parted, enabling them to cross. Many of the prophets witnessed this event. (2 Kings 2)
- The Jordan was a river of healing. Naaman, a commander of the Syrian army was healed of leprosy as he dipped in the Jordan. (2 Kings 5)
- It was a place of provision—Elijah was fed by the ravens at the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan (1 Kings 17:5).
Now, the prophets were returning to that place of miracles and encounters with God. And they were saying, ‘We are going to build here!’
It’s time to make room.
Don’t settle for ‘monument’ thinking.
Today, hear your Father saying, ‘It honors Me when you talk about miracles of the past. It ignites your faith when you revisit places where I have moved in past times. However, now is the time to decide…
‘I am going to live in the place of miracles. This is where my Father has called me to build and grow. I am not going to settle for anything less!’
I introduced one of my sessions at our ‘Growing in the Prophetic’ seminar with some of the thoughts in this post.
Today’s article was also inspired by a prophetic insight recently given to our team by Prophet Kevin Forlong (also from Melbourne, Australia).
In reference to this story in 2 Kings 6, he said, ‘We need to go to another place.. where they go to is to the Jordan, which is the place of miracles historically. …It’s time to go to a new place in our thinking, in our anticipations, in our expectations.’ You can find Kevin and Dariel Forlong at www.kevinforlong.org
