I was not going to write a new blog article this week, due to just returning from a ministry trip. However, reports from the Philippines, where Typhoon Haiyan has resulted in a national calamity, have stirred me.
When disaster strikes, whether close to us or internationally, each one of us has the ability to contribute to the relief effort.
On the natural side, we can help send resources by contributing financially and in practical ways, so that help reaches those who are in desperate need. We can also pray, so that the resources of Heaven are mobilised and released.
5 Ways Prayer Helps in Times of Tragedy
God is not the author of natural disasters, and He is not a remote spectator—rather, He is a God of love who is present with us in our suffering.
The hardship and need looks overwhelming. Can our prayers really make a difference?
- In the Bible, we read of how Daniel prayed and a powerful angel was despatched from Heaven to wage warfare for the nation and bring God’s message of hope. (Dan 10:12)
- We also learn of how Elijah prayed and a nationwide famine led to revival—and then prayed again and the drought was broken. (James 5:17-18)
James tells us, ‘The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.’ (James 5:16)
Whether the need is one close to us and loved ones are suffering, or an international disaster on a huge scale, here are some of the resources that are released from heaven when we pray:
1. Prayer Enables Divine Positioning
We can pray that God directs people—through His Spirit or via angelic intervention—to be at the right place at the right time for relief and protection.
When disaster strikes, timing can be critical: the timing of a rescue, or medical assistance, or food and water. We can pray for God to position and protect people and resources, as they are needed.
2. Prayer Releases Angelic Assistance
When we pray, angels are released to help those for whom we are praying. Amongst the many things angels can do, they are able to bring guidance, supernatural protection and comfort.
3. Prayer Releases Supernatural Wisdom
We can pray for Godly wisdom and skill to be given to those in Government, leaders of relief organisations, and others who are involved in practical ways, such as medical assistance.
4. Prayer Moves Hearts to Give
Through prayer, the Holy Spirit is released to move upon people’s hearts, to give pray and go, to provide help in times of need.
5. Prayer Empowers the Gospel
We can pray that the way is prepared for the Gospel to be released, and God’s word of love and comfort to be shared with those in need. (Matt 9:38, 1 Tim 2:1-5)
With our hands, we can give. With our mouths, we can pray. Let’s join together now in a few moments of prayer for those who have been affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, as well as those who are involved in the relief efforts. And let’s also be reminded of the power of prayer that is available to us when times of trial or disaster occur.

I write about the question, ‘Where is God when natural disasters strike?’ in the following post: Earthquakes, Prophecy and the Heart of God.
In the Bible, we read of angels bringing comfort and strengthening (Luke 22:43), guidance (Matt 2:19), and protection (Ps 34:7). Angels are employed in answer to prayer (Acts 12:1-17)
