Recently, I was praying about an upcoming prophetic training session. A number of those attending were new to prophecy but eager to learn.
So, I wanted to lead them in a simple and powerful prophetic activation.
As I walked over a local hill, the Holy Spirit brought these words to mind:
“Let there be light.”
Prophesy Simply with This Key
That simple sentence from Genesis became a key.
A key opens doors, enabling us to enter new spaces.
Similarly, a prophetic word can open new things God has for us.
It can bring clarity and release God’s power.
Paul said,
“Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.” (1 Corinthians 14:1, NKJV)
If this resonates with you, here are seven insights to help you prophesy simply and confidently.
1. Start in Prayer: The First Step to Begin to Prophesy
Prophecy begins in conversation with God.
In Ezekiel 37, God led the prophet Ezekiel into a vision of a valley filled with dry bones. And then, God spoke to him. From that conversation, Ezekiel began to prophesy.
That’s our starting point, too.
Prophecy flows from relationship. As we pray, we quiet our hearts and tune in to the Holy Spirit.
Then, we can release it through faith.
“So I spoke this message, just as He told me…” Ezekiel 37:7 NLT
2. Hear from God: The Heart of the Prophetic Gift
Ezekiel’s confidence wasn’t in himself, but the fact that God had spoken. His role was simply to share what the Holy Spirit said.
What a powerful principle!
Our prophetic authority is in the simple truth, “God has said”.
This is the heart of the prophetic gift: to hear and share what the Holy Spirit is saying.
When we hear from God, such as through Scripture, a prompt, a picture, or an impression from the Spirit, we can respond.
Then, when we’re confident that our words align with God’s Word and His nature, we can speak boldly.
Sometimes, the results won’t be immediate. For Ezekiel, the bones rattled before life came. There was a shaking, a disturbance in the valley—but it was the beginning of a miracle.
If your prophetic word stirs things up, don’t be discouraged. God’s Word is at work!
3. Tune In and Test Your Prophetic Insight
“Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. Do not scoff at prophecies, but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good.” (1 Thess 5:19-21, NLT)
As we grow in our prophetic gifts, our insights may go beyond simple encouragement. They may become more specific, sometimes even influencing decisions.
That’s why it’s crucial to test what we hear. Not every impression is from God (see Matt 16:23–33), so discernment is essential.
Ask:
- Scripture: Does it align with God’s Word? (Ps 119:89; 2 Tim 3:16)
- Witness: Do I have peace and confirmation from the Holy Spirit? (John 14:26; 1 John 2:27)
- Character of God: Does this reflect Jesus and the Father’s nature? (Heb 1:2)
- Purpose: Is it encouraging, strengthening, or comforting? (1 Cor 14:3)
- Accountability: Am I willing to share this with mature leaders for confirmation? (1 Cor 14:29; Heb 13:17)
- Fruit: Will responding to this bear good fruit? (John 15:16–17)
Spiritual discernment grows with use (Heb 5:14). If you’re just beginning, trust your Heavenly Father to guide you (Luke 11:11–13), and remember—being honest and relaxed invites grace, not pressure.
These next two keys are simple prophetic activations, but when aligned with God’s will, they carry heaven’s power.
4. Start with a Simple Decree: “Let There Be…”
The very first prophetic declaration recorded in the Bible was spoken by God Himself: “Let there be light.”
With this word, He released creative power that shattered darkness.
And it’s a reminder. We don’t need to start with something long or complicated.
Instead, we can begin with a life-giving declaration, such as:
- “Let there be healing in this situation.”
- Or, “Let there be restoration.”
- “Let clarity come into this decision.”
In prayer, a simple prophetic decree like “Let there be peace in Jesus’ name” can become a bold prophetic declaration (John 14:13).
The phrase “Let there be” refreshed my heart that day.
Through it, God gave me a renewed confidence as I prepared for the prophetic training.
5. Use Scripture as a Basis for Prophetic Declarations
The Bible is our foundation and source for prophecy. And when the Holy Spirit highlights a verse, it can become a powerful now word.
Ask, “What does God’s Word say about this situation?”
Remember, Jesus spoke boldly, “It is written!”
For example, we can declare, “It is written…”:
- “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10)
- “By His wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5)
- “My God shall supply all your needs” (Philippians 4:19)
When prompted by the Holy Spirit, Biblical promises can be powerful prophetic declarations.
6. Don’t Give Up—Speak Again When You Don’t See Results
Ezekiel spoke once, and the bones came together. But the miracle wasn’t complete until he spoke again.
“Then he said to me, ‘Speak a prophetic message…’ So I spoke… and breath came into their bodies. They all came to life…”?Ezekiel 37:9–10 NLT
Maybe you’ve prophesied before and didn’t see the outcome you expected. You prayed. You spoke. But nothing changed—yet.
This could be your time to speak again.
God may be inviting you to revisit that promise with a simple, faith-filled word. Don’t stop at the rattling—prophesy until the breath comes!
7. Take Action: Learn to Prophesy by Starting Today
Ask the Holy Spirit: “Is there a ‘Let there be’ word You want me to speak today?”
Then, say it aloud—in Jesus’ name.
You don’t have to wait until you feel confident. Just begin.
When the Holy Spirit leads, your words carry power and release God’s purposes.
Jesus is Our Example
Jesus said, “My words are spirit and life.” (John 6:63)
One of the most powerful prophetic declarations in the Bible was a command given by Jesus. “Lazarus, come forth!” And Lazarus stepped out of the tomb.
What “let there be” word is God putting on your heart?
Your words may seem small, but when they are Spirit-led, they carry power to transform lives.
