What is a Divine Appointment?

Divine AppointmentA Divine appointment is a moment in time, in which:

  • You encounter God
  • You come across a person or group that is significant in God’s purposes for you, or
  • A circumstance take place, that you realize has been set up by the Holy Spirit

It is a miracle moment.

You may have entered a Divine appointment, knowing it is one. But often, a Divine appointment is unexpected! It is only during or afterwards, that you become aware of its significance.

A Divine appointment is an event that has been orchestrated by God.

6 Characteristics of a Divine Appointment

1. A Divine Appointment Often Takes Place in a Vulnerable Moment

It was a day Jacob later referred to, as “the day of his distress” (Gen 35:3).
He was fleeing for his life, away from his childhood home—and his murderous brother.

Late that day, Jacob reached a stony, lonely place. “A certain place” (Gen 28:11).
Night was coming on, and he could travel no further.

Jacob had no idea he was about to encounter God. For he hadn’t stopped there by choice—only necessity.

A Divine appointment often happens when we are at the end of our capability.

This is the grace of God—that He is saying to many of us today, “Where you are—this place, this moment, this season in your life: I am with you.”

You may have ended up somewhere you weren’t expecting.
It may seem dry; it may be hard.
You may feel vulnerable in some way.
But He says, “This is your place of Divine appointment.”

2. A Divine Appointment Turns Your Distress to Worship

That night, lying on the hard ground, Jacob had a dream.

  • He saw a staircase reaching from Heaven to earth, with angels traveling up and down it
  • Above the stairs, stood God Almighty—telling Jacob of his identity, his purpose and destiny!

He awoke and realized, “This place—is not what I thought”.
He had stumbled into a Divine appointment.

And Jacob declared with wonder,
“How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” (Gen 28:17)

Because of that encounter with God, the place of Jacob’s distress turned into a place of worship.

“Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. He called that place Bethel” (Gen 28:19, NIV)

Today, hear your Father say, “I love you! I am here!”

As God interrupts the darkness with His glory, your heart will turn towards Him in worship.

3. At the Divine Appointment, Your Perspective is Changed

At Bethel, Jacob’s expectation changed.
He was no longer running from his past—he was stepping into his future.

“He called that place Bethel” (Gen 28:19).
Jacob renamed his location.

From now on, future generations knew that place as “Bethel”, meaning “the House of God”.

Today you can anticipate, that as He did for Jacob, God is giving you grace to rename your location.

  • Dry, tough place
  • Hard place
  • Place of waiting
  • Challenging place

You realize, “This is my place of Divine appointment. God is in this location!”

4. At the Divine Appointment, Your Fear Meets God’s Favor

In his flight from home, Jacob was motivated by fear—and probably, stung by regret.
He had just cheated his brother Esau out of his father’s blessing.
Now, Esau was plotting to murder him.

He was alone, his father Isaac was dying, and Jacob would never see his beloved mother again.

  • In spite of all of that, at the height of Jacob’s pain, God showed up in His glory

Instead of shaming him, God called, “Jacob! I’ve chosen you!”

Fear met the favor of God—and Jacob was never the same again.

Today, receive the touch of the Holy Spirit upon the eyes of your heart.
Be assured that God is present in your pain.
And not only that, He doesn’t shame you for your mistakes.
Instead, He extends His favor towards you.

Jesus reaches out His hand through your fear, to rescue you.

5. At the Divine Appointment, God Reveals His Grace to You

A painful circumstance is usually complex.
And in Jacob’s situation, it was not only that he had failed.
His family had also failed him.

  • Our messy situation, or painful transition, may be the result of others’ mistakes, as well as our own
  • We may recognize our own flawed choices have, in part, led to where we are

And yet, and this is the very place God shows up. Here, your Father says, “I choose you!”

There was nothing Jacob had done to deserve this favor.
God’s favor towards Jacob was not based on personal merit: it was founded on covenant.
Simply, Jacob was an heir to the promises given to his father and grandfather.

And like Jacob, you are an heir of a covenant; and of a promise, through faith in Christ. [2]

Now, no matter what has been before, He says, “I have a hope and a future for you.” (Jer 29:11)

6. In a Divine Appointment, Everything Changes

Jacob’s life was changed by the revelation of an open heaven above him.

Up until now, Jacob had not known God personally. To Jacob, He was the God of his father and grandfather.
But from this time on, He would be known as “the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”. [3]

In the midst of his pain, Jacob was assured of his identity and purpose.
And years later, he led his own children back to Bethel.

  • Another generation had a worship encounter with God.

When we are led by the Holy Spirit, every moment is sacred.
But a Divine appointment stands out as a tipping point—afterwards, things will never be the same.

This is your miracle moment.

  1. Dear Helen,
I always wonder about God`s way to talk to me. Thank you for this article. I am actually very ill at the moment ( ear aches , have to take strong medication for a while) on top of it my financial situation depends on somebody who treats me very badly, teases wherever possible and makes me unhappy (energy vampire) I never know what comes next . When I could get up a little today and for the first time after a fortnight can do a bit, I prayed and heard look at enliven blog, an now there is this astonishing match of the article and my situation. I need to get well and I need a new way to become independent financially. So far Jesus has helped through all this and he always says : Do not worry for I care for you. I just hope for a Psalm 23 situation wishing this to everyone in a similar point in life. How good that you are there Helen. Blessings Conny

    1. Hi Conny, I’m praying for you right now. May the Holy Spirit anoint your vision, so you can see beyond what is, into the realms of His possibility for you. Hope, and faith that a page is turning and more of His good plans are being revealed to you.
I pray for healing to be released to your ears, in Jesus’ Name. We break off unhealthy ‘strings’ that are affecting Conny’s soul, may she know freedom to dance and sing, even in the midst of the circumstances, because you are good.
To all who mourn in Israel,
he will give a crown of beauty for ashes,
a joyous blessing instead of mourning,
      festive praise instead of despair.
In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks
that the Lord has planted for his own glory. Isaiah 61:3 NLT

Thank you for this timely article. I am a frustrated school teacher. I choose this career because being in college you have to major in something. Now four years as a teacher I am frustrated, drained, and partially angry for getting a degree I don’t want to use. I have students who enjoy drama and are so LOUD! I’m not accustomed to this behavior and I have prayed daily to be delivered from teaching and for God to open divine doors into the field He wants me in. I have applied to over 50 jobs in the last 3 days. I have one interview tomorrow and a job fair for adjunct professor on Saturday. My prayer is that God would give me revelation on whether these jobs are premature moves or should I wait until the school year is over. On top of all of this I’m expecting my first child/rainbow baby with my husband. Being around stress all day makes me worry for the health of my unborn child, so I feel changing environments would improve my mood and health of my baby in the long run. I ask for your prayer as I go on this journey. I know I’m in a season of divine appointment and although I’m super confused on what to do I know God will provide clear directions.

    1. Hi Christal, your current situation does sound stressful, and I pray that the timing and opportunities become clear to you, and you’ll discover your “sweet spot” with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
May that stillness of heart and mind and peace concerning your work environment be released to you, in Jesus’ Name.
      Congratulations on your baby! <3

  4. Hello Helen, I just want to thank you so much for your on time Prophetic messages. They are very encouraging and helpful especially during this process that’s taking place in my life. I’ve been through so much during these last few years, but I continue to press through it all! I know that All things are working for my good because I Love GOD and I have been called according to HIS purpose. I also know that everything is in GOD’s Timing and HE is in Control of everything! I will continue to Walk by Faith and not by sight, believing and trusting in the Word of GOD! Continue to stay encouraged my Sister in CHRIST, Many Blessings…..

    1. You are a woman of faith Sonya – and I love that He is a rewarder of faith, a rewarder of your faith – you reminded me of this Scripture
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (Heb 11:6)

  5. Jennifer Donnelly

    Good Day Helen,
Thank you for your article, it has really inspired me. For many years I had been confused, unsure and struggling to find my purpose in this life. I tried many different ideas, ministry & pursuits. I felt like I was losing my mind. On one of those pursuits I was totally rejected by a person I tried to get to go into a ministry venture with. I thought well where to from here. To cut a long story short, I was given an opportunity to volunteer at an organisation. At first I was very reluctant because it was out of my comfort zone but continued nontheless. I tried to make excuses not to be there. Well I can say after being thrown in the deep end, I am exactly where I ought to be. I am so grateful for your article that confirms this. Thank you & continue to be a blessing to the Body of Christ.

    1. What a blessing (to you and others) to have found Father’s space for you in this season, Jennifer. Out of the comfort zone and into the miracle zone.
      And thank you <3

  6. Thank you so much for this…I have been battling so much discouragement, fear, and heartache. This post ministered to me in a mighty way and gave me hope I am not at the end of things, and God has not forgotten me.

    1. Hi Patrick, I’m praying for you right now. Father breathe new life and hope and strength into Patrick today, in Jesus’ Name

  7. Dear Helen
Thank you so much for your post. It has really ministered to me and I am refreshed. Since last week I have been through extremely challenging time when I have been critisised, bullied, blamed, mocked etc. I am looking forward to my divine moment from now on. I was just crying out to GOD in prayer just before I read this. GOD is so good. Thank you again. GOD bless.

    1. Hi Francisca, receive His strength and courage today. You are loved, you are chosen, you are approved. This is His favor over you <3

  8. Dear Helen,

I thank Jesus for the accurate prophetic word he has given you to minister to us.i have experienced the dry, tough place, hard place, place of waiting and the challenging place and im asking the holy spirit when he will give me the grace to rename the location.
The message God has used you to share comes as a confirmation that everything is turning around for the glory of God. Thank you for answering Jesus call into ministry.

    Blessings,

    1. Hi Tracy, I love that He promises us the streams and rivers in the desert, and that the wilderness is our place of Divine appointment. I pray this over you
      Isaiah 41:18
“I will open rivers in desolate heights,
      And fountains in the midst of the valleys;
I will make the wilderness a pool of water,
And the dry land springs of water.”

  9. Dear Helen,
Thanks so much for the prophetic word you enrich us with. May God bless you abundantly.
Just like Jacob, I’m also stuck on a very dry ground. Deep in my heart am strong & believing that God is in control but things don’t change.
I lost my job in June this year. I was put in prison for 9 days for something I didn’t do. In the prison I preached the gospel & inmates got saved & most of them were released. Now without a job I concentrated on serving God through the gift He gave me, the gift of prophecy. I didn’t have time while working to serve God & it always hurt me to the bones. I really love it when I deliver God’s messages to His people to an extent that even if am hungry I don’t feel the hunger.
I have a family of three sons & a wife. I find it difficult to cater for them. I think about their education, food, clothing etc. I pray to God to elevate me to a level where I can be able to meet my obligations. Please pray for me too.
    God bless.

    1. Hi Geoffrey, yes I pray that God’s source of provision will open up for you!
In Nehemiah chapter 4 those who worked on the wall – for a time – built the wall with one hand whilst carrying a weapon in the other, so that their city and families would be protected. There are times when we need to multi-task for our families, serve God in ministry and serve Him in employment too, whilst it appears to slow things down we see in Nehemiah it actually brought glory to God. The wall continued to be built! They were the champions. So if you need to work with one hand and preach with the other for a season, you can glorify God that way. He has all the time in the world! I pray you and your family are enlarged and provided for in every way.

  10. Hello Helen
i just received your word today and it speaks directly to my current situation. I have no family members in my life so i have to struggle to do everything on my own. I owned a house before but through my sin and disobedience to God i lost it. I went away from the place i was born kidding myself that i was looking for new adventure but the truth was that i was running away. I k now i have sinned against the Lord for not valuing what He gave me back then. Now i have had the feeling for a long time to return to the place of my birth. But there is a big problem i do not have any where to live and no one else in my life.

I have been praying to God to please provide me with another house. And also to be able to return back to the place i was born. I have also been asking God to open up opportunities for me to not just go back but to do something for His Kingdom in the poorest areas of our community there. But it is as if the Lord is not wanting me to do that. I have been asking God to show me His will but sill no answer. I just know there must be somewhere where the Lord wants me to be. I also want to bear more fruit of His spirit. Please Pray for me . Maybe i am not asking in the right way.

    Thank you for your kindness.

God bless you and keep you.

    1. Hi Catharina, I’m praying for you right now, to know God’s steps for you. Psalm 18v36 says, He enlarges the path underneath us – where we are stepping, right now, and I pray that for you. God is wise, and He knows how much we can take and how fast we can go. He is not a hurry. I love this passage on his wisdom
‘But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.’ (James 3:17-18)
