God calls us to live a life of faith, so, we don’t have to seek confirmation about every little thing He tells us. And we don’t always need prophetic signposts
We can trust the Holy Spirit to guide us moment-by-moment as to where to go, and what to do or say. This is part of developing an intimate relationship with God. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27, NKJV).
But what if you are seeking God’s will over an important decision? In this case, there is a Biblical basis to have your prophetic guidance confirmed.
- This is especially true when major changes of life direction or ministry are at stake and when your decisions are impacting the lives of people around you.
I like to use ‘signposts’ as a metaphor for prophetic confirmations.
Like a signpost, a prophetic confirmation lets you know you’re on the right track—it is pointing in the same direction you believe God has spoken to you about.
Look at Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Throughout their journeys, God gave multiple signposts all pointing the same direction—prophetic reminders that He had chosen them and was giving the land of Canaan to their descendants.
What are Some Prophetic Signposts God Uses?
‘I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.’ (Psalm 32:8, NKJV)
How does God speak to us through prophetic confirmation? There are many different ways the Holy Spirit communicates to us, such as:
- Prophetic encounters, personal prophecies, dreams, and visions
- The pull (sense) of God’s call towards something
- The way you are ‘wired’—you know this fits with the way God has created you
- The affirmation of oversight
- Opportunities (we may call these open doors)
- Unity amongst key decision-makers
- Past experiences that point to this
Some Signposts can Only be Seen Looking Back
‘For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.’ (Eph 2:10, NIV)
Sometimes, a signpost can be seen in the past, in retrospect.
You are seeking guidance and then realize as you look back, that God knew the path ahead.
Your Father knew you would eventually come to this crossroads, and has been directing you this way all along.
This happened to me in 2016. I had been on Prophet David McCracken’s ministry team for 6 years and my husband and I were committed to the team for life. But then one day, David announced God had spoken to him about us broadening to become a family of ministries. This meant I was suddenly given an opportunity to form my own ministry!
Even though this was a totally unexpected crossroads, my husband and I were able to look back and see some very clear signposts. When we saw those signposts, we realized this was Father’s intention all along! We were able to progress very quickly and in the space of two months, Enliven Ministries was birthed within the David McCracken Ministries family.
The reason I could cooperate with the Divine acceleration God had for me, was that I knew without a shadow of a doubt those signposts were there.
So, just because signposts are needed, doesn’t mean it is going to take a long time for you to reach a clear decision.
You can trust when it is God’s time to bring something to birth, He can cause a lot of signs to come together at once—and some of those can be seen in retrospect.
Embrace the Protection of Spiritual Oversight
‘Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.’ (Prov 15:22, NIV)
There is a Biblical principle that for major life or ministry-changing decisions, having confirmation from spiritual oversight is crucial.
- This helps with protection, discernment, accountability, and wisdom, as well as being a timing check.
In my own case, I had the facilitation and rich wisdom of my leaders—including David McCracken’s own Board. We also had expert assistance provided in the area of setting up our not-for-profit ministry.
Additionally, confirmation can also come from others God has placed around our lives. In 2 Corinthians 13:1 the Apostle Paul quoted, “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.” It is a principle that was brought forward to the New Testament.
Loren Cunningham, the founder of YWAM, coined a phrase, ‘The Wise Men Principle’. He wrote,
‘Just as the Three Wise Men individually followed the star and in doing so were all led to the same Christ, so God will often use two or more spiritually sensitive people to confirm what He is telling you.’ [1]
So, if you are facing a major decision and you believe God has spoken to you—seek for God’s prophetic confirmation. When you look to see what signposts confirm the direction you believe God has shown you:
- You are balancing wisdom and faith
- You are weighing up your prophetic insight
And you are honoring the Holy Spirit, His voice, and His ways.
10 Lessons on Prophetic Guidance
Is the above article timely, or would you like to learn more on this topic? The teaching on signposts is just one of the lessons from my Prophetic Guidance Master Class, in which I tackle some tough issues such as:
- How do faith and wisdom work together when following prophetic guidance?
- What extra care should I take when relationships or emotional issues are involved?
- What should I do about a closed door?
- What can I do if my prophetic guidance is unclear?
- What is God doing when there are delays and disappointments?
These are some of the questions I explore in my Prophetic Guidance Master Class. Plus, I’ve just uploaded the PDF transcript of these ten lessons, so you can keep your own summary for reference.
You can find the Prophetic Guidance Master Class in the Enliven Prophetic School here.
Modules on the School currently include: ‘How to hear God’s voice’ ‘How to Begin and Grow in Prophecy’, ‘The Seer Gift: How to Grow in Pictures and Visions’, ‘Discernment and Prophetic Warnings’ and the ‘Prophetic Guidance Master Class’
