Prophetic DreamI believe God is stirring prophetic dreams in the hearts of His people. He wants to encourage you to partner with Him for its fulfillment.

Your prophetic dream may be a dream of the night that you have had in the past. You believe it speaks of the future and something God will do in your life. A dream can also be a vision that is very personal and heartfelt in nature.

One definition of a dream could be, ‘a desire of the heart that has a picture attached.’ You can close your eyes and imagine that dream’s fulfillment. You believe it is of God.

Between the birth of a dream and its fulfillment, there can be a process and a delay. Our Father is allowing a time-lapse to grow our faith and to set up the circumstances, timing that will lead to the dream’s fulfillment.

Joseph is one example of a prophetic dreamer whose dreams came true. [1] Here are 4 things that Joseph’s story can teach us about participating with God in the fulfillment of our prophetic dreams.

1. Source Your Dreams in God

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Ps 37:4)

The promise of God is that as you delight in Him, He will impart His own desires and dreams into your life. You will discover your calling: the place where your dreams and God’s dreams intersect.

As prophetic dreamers, we are frequently going to be living in seasons when dreams are not yet fulfilled. You may have more than one dream—or one dream may come true and then God entrusts a new one to you.

During times of transition, your Father wants to be your delight and the source of your satisfaction.

At the time Joseph’s prophetic dreams about ruling became a reality, he was able to honour God fully for the gift on his life. Joseph journeyed the long and painful season of transition with God, keeping his heart pure and God-focused in the process.

2. Attach Your Dream to a Cause

‘Jesus answered, You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”’(John 18:37, NKJV)

Our Father wants us to dream with Him, and one of the reasons is that He wants to imprint a cause—His purpose—on our hearts.

As Christians, our dreams are not for self-gratification. We dream to honour God. Prophetic dreams are powerful when those dreams are hitched to a God-given cause. Our cause is our ‘why’. Our cause is our reason, our ‘be-cause’; it is what draws us towards our destiny.

The cause God places on your heart may be a problem that you can be a part of the solution for. It may be to help people, to make a difference. A cause can relate to family. I believe God is saying, ‘Will you allow Me to place my desires in your heart? Let me show you how your gifts and calling fit into My bigger plan.’

By the time Joseph ascended to rulership in Egypt next to Pharaoh, he knew clearly the ‘why’ behind the dreams God had given to him. He was called to save Israel and bring his tribe into Egypt for God’s season. He was called to save nations from decimation during drought. And he was called to bring honour to God at a high level.

3. Dream Big

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…’ (Eph 3:20)

God-sized dreams are large dreams—they are dreams that we cannot fulfill in our own strength. Joseph had prophetic dreams about being a ruler one day. Then, the opposite of his dream’s fulfillment took place. He suffered slavery and imprisonment. But God’s hand was on his life.

The fulfillment of your prophetic dream will bring glory to God. When it takes place He will receive the credit, because people see Divine intervention and the favour of God on your life.

4. Act on Your Dream

‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.’ (Col 3:23-24)

The fulfillment of a prophetic dream is a partnership between God and us. Our Father is a God of relationship and we must play our part. So steward your dreams. Invest in them. Anticipate and prepare for what lies ahead. A dream without diligence will die.

Joseph worked hard every step of the way. In his lowest place he was faithful to serve, to continue developing his gifts of business and stewardship. When the door finally opened, he was ready and prepared.

Cooperate with God in the fulfillment of your prophetic dreams and your faithfulness will pave the way, along with God’s favour, for your dream to become a reality.

  1. Dear Helen,
    it is often amazing that when I think about something you come up with the topic on this blog. There is something that makes me wonder all the time and that is that I often experience situations and see places that I have never seen before, but I know exaclty that they appeared in my dreams which often made me think a whole day.
    I do not know why I have this and I would prefer Jesus to give me clear instructions about the meaning of my dreams or what I shall do when I recognize a place or situation. My mother who was very wise and had several gifts always said when we experience déja vues we are on the right way with God. However I often do know what exactly I shall do then and in those cases I cannot get an answer. Is that a gift in development? Shall I do something to develop it ?What can I do?
    It already happened to me that I came into a school building where I had never been before but suddenly recognize childrens’ pictures in the corridor as seen in a dream I had dreamt long time ago. And I knew the room order of the building from that dream. This dream thing scares me a bit because I do not know if I have a special task to fulfill then or what God wants to tell me.     1. Hi Conny, there are often these elements of mystery in our gifts, and I think it is ok not to know what to do with them…Father’s ‘treasure hunt’ for you to explore and enjoy the journey with Him.
      The only thing I would suggest, and you probably do this anyway – is to use those times as prayer prompts. The deja vue is like a marker from God set ahead of know you are in the right place at the right time and that is cause to praise, a reassurance He has prepared the way. Use those moments of awareness to enjoy the Presence of the Holy Spirit and also to ask Him if there is some way He wants to lead you in prayer concerning the place or circumstance you are in.
      It’s always about relationship before a task, the task flows out of the relationship, so focus on that first. What a blessing to have a supernatural gift from God!

        thank you for your answer. That relationship aspect is very helpful and of course it is a blessing. I also have other gifts and I am grateful to Jesus. The dream thing is just a bit difficult for me, because when I dreamt the school dream it was a nightmare. I saw myself the way I looked at the age of 22 in that school I did not have a clearly defined role there but I was terribly afraid and everybody was because there was an amok warning I even saw two colleagues who hid with me in the art room and I new that behind there was a storage room for material and these to rooms where the only safe ones. When I was employed by the school for teaching English and Spanish I entered the building for the first time aged 40 and recognized the two colleagues and the rest I already told you. On the one hand I am grateful for this gift on the other hand I had a very bad time at that school because of workplace bullies and my general feeling was being unhappy, because my prophetic mum had died about 6 months before leaving me behind without counseling and a broken marriage and then this strange job. I had never wanted to become a teacher for children before that I had worked in adult education teaching English. I still have some bad memories about that school though I know that God sent me there to help some children who were absolutely lost in that jungle, because of some evil characters there. But after that school time I felt devastated and worn out. I am still looking for a new employment, because I only freelance and teach some university students. That is why I wish so much to find out more about God’s intentions with letting me dream this way. I also feel some kind of regret that I did not quit the job and look for something nicer, maybe this was a warning dream and I simply did not take it seriously enough. I hope that Jesus will help me to do something purposful and change my situation for the better.
        Anyway I also want to thank you for letting God use you in this way you are such a big help to everyone.

  2. Hi Helen,

    I wanted to thank you for allowing yourself to be used by God. The Lord often uses your insight and experience of the prophetic to minister to me and answer questions that I may have.
    About five years ago I started having dreams which the Lord would reveal to me as significant and they would come to pass, not just personally but also for others.
    A good example in my life was when I had a dream and the Lord spoke to me that I would travel a lot. This was exciting because at the time it seemed impossible that this dream would come to pass. I then went through years where it seemed as if dreams ‘dried up’ and the Lord seemed to stop using dreams to speak to me. However, I think this dream of travel was still very much alive in my spirit. I may have started to forget about the way in which the Lord can use dreams to encourage and inspire us during that period, but then in the latter part of last year, I was blessed with an all expenses paid trip to two countries in Europe. The dream came true and I believe is also a dream that will continue to come true in the future. The Lord really blessed me for remaining faithful and standing on His promises, and His favour upon my life was evident to those around me as they could see it was all the Lord’s doing.
    The Lord began giving me more dreams over the last few months, and when I read your blog entry, I was encouraged once more and reminded of how God can use our dreams. I pray that others may be encouraged through my testimony as well.

    1. Hi Tracey, what a wonderful testimony, I am excited for you! It is so good, and faith-building, when these things happen in our lives. We can look back and see the ‘memorial markers’ of God’s goodness and dreams come true. What He has done before, He will do again. He is faithful!

  3. Thank God for your life.. I have had very baffling dreams.. I keep dreaming of my dead uncle coming and talking to me, like he used to when he was alive. He would ask me to cook for him etc. I sense something is not right as these dreams often don’t five me peace afterwards. I have a prophetic dreams and I have been told by a few ministers that I have a prophetic gift, I asked the Lord to confirm and He gave me a Scripture in Jeremiah 1:5. That was confirmation for me.. But i feel there is a blockage of some sort. Would like to hear from you and thoughts. God bless you.

    1. Hi Towa,
      If you are having a recurring dream that is not a peaceful one, I recommend that you take time to pray about it. The dream may be a key to something God wants to heal or bring freedom to in your life. Also have a leader pray with you or receive prayer ministry.
