How to Overcome the Battle in Your Mind

Do your thoughts, mindset, perspective and beliefs come under siege at times, or do you struggle with emotions such as anxiety or stress? This week I am sharing some important keys to overcoming the battle in your mind, along with a prayer to help you break free.

It has often been said that the mind is the primary battlefield when it comes to spiritual warfare. The Apostle Paul teaches about this, saying:

‘For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.’ (2 Cor 10:3-5, NIV)

1. Know the Importance of Your Thought Life

Your mind is like valuable real estate and the enemy is constantly haggling to gain a slice of that ground.

Why is your mind so valuable? The truth is, whatever is taking place in your thought life, even subconsciously, is controlling your whole life. By extension, it is influencing the lives of others that you are connected to.

The enemy wants that ground because he knows the ramifications of your thought life.

Satan knows that if you wake up to who you are and Whose you are, you will be unstoppable!

2. Identify the Source of Your Thoughts

‘…letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.’ (Rom 8:6, NLT)

What we are thinking, what is playing in our head, reveals the source; the voice we are listening to.

If our thought life is not in alignment with God’s Word, and with the Holy Spirit, something is wrong. We need to ask, ‘what am I thinking, and what is the source of what I am thinking?’

We either have the mind of Christ, or we are being influenced by another source—the kingdom of darkness.

We see this contrast clearly in Matthew 16, where in one moment, Jesus commends Peter for having a revelation direct from the Father. And in the next paragraph, He is rebuking Satan for operating through Peter’s mind and words, adding, “You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” (see Matt 16:16-23)

There is no such thing as neutral ground when it comes to your thought life. Your every thought, belief and attitude is either in agreement with God’s Word—or it is under contention.

3. Realize Dominant Emotions are a Clue

If you are experiencing overwhelming emotions—such as anxiety—a key to breakthrough is to recognize that underlying those feelings may be a belief about what is true.

The Holy Spirit wants to reveal what God declares to be true in Scripture, and the perspective of what your Father is seeing. ‘For the kingdom of God is…righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit’. (Rom 14:17)

4. Choose to Agree with the Spirit and God’s Word

‘The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for, “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.’ (1 Corinthians 2:15)

Once you have identified any message, any ‘tape’ that is playing in your mind that is not in alignment with the Holy Spirit, God’s Word, and His promises, you are armed for battle. You can combat those messages and lies of the enemy. You can reject them—refuse to give the enemy that ground.

You can also choose to receive and believe what God says concerning you, and the situation you are thinking about.

A Prayer to Help Overcome the Battle in the Mind

Jesus paid the price of His own blood to purchase you, body, soul and spirit, so that He could redeem you to the Father. (1 Thess 5:23)

Your thought life, your mind is valuable to God.

It can be helpful, as you identify particular lies and ungodly messages, to renounce them. I encourage you to be intentional about replacing ungodly thinking and negative messages with the truth of God’s Word. Read again the opening Scripture (2 Cor 10:3-5) and pray the following:

‘Father, I recognize that there have been ways of thinking, and thoughts that have been playing in my mind that are not from you…Thoughts that have been sourced in human interests, and in the kingdom of darkness.
I repent of these thoughts (take time to identify and name them)
I reject and renounce them, in Jesus Name. I tear down every stronghold in my life and cancel every strategy and assignment of the enemy related to those messages and thoughts, in Jesus’ Name.
My Lord and my God, I choose to believe what You have said, and in particular, what You say about me. I choose to align my thinking with Your Spirit, Your Word and Your promises to me.
I receive Your peace as a guard over my heart and mind right now, in Jesus’ Name.’
